Teacher Education Admission

Degree Progression

The School of Education undergraduate programs are organized into three phases as described below. Candidates are required to meet Phase II admission criteria in order to be officially admitted to the School of Education and move forward with professional education courses.

The required core curriculum is based on freshmen and sophomore level coursework in English, social and behavioral science, mathematics, science, humanities and fine arts. The core curriculum ranges from 41 to 45 hours depending on degree program.

Requirements for admission to Phase II (Teacher Education Program):

  1. Completion of core curriculum
  2. A minimum core grade point average of 2.75
  3. Passing scores on Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (CORE)*

* Praxis Core Exemption: Students who provide proof of an ACT score of at least a 21 composite (or SAT equivalent; View the SAT Equivalency Scoring sheet for more information) OR have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a minimum of 60 hours of completed coursework are exempt from taking the Praxis CORE exam for admission to Phase II.

Courses EDCI 352 and EDSP 308 are the only professional education courses that may be taken prior to admission to Phase II. Elementary Education majors may also take EDRD 355. A minimum grade of “C” in all professional education courses is required.

The core curriculum must be complete. Additionally, a minimum grade of “C” in all graded professional education courses is a prerequisite to the next level of education courses and student teaching. All professional education courses, with the exception of those required during student teaching must be completed prior to admission to student teaching. All courses in general education, content and related fields must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” prior to admission to student teaching.
