The Office of Veteran and Military Services is here to help you navigate your transition into college life, offering support every step of the way. From applying for benefits to connecting with fellow student veterans, we’re committed to making sure you have the tools, resources, and community you need to thrive at Ole Miss.

As a military-connected student, we’re here to support your transition to higher education and ensure you have access to all the benefits and resources available to you. This guide will help you navigate the steps to becoming an Ole Miss student while maximizing your benefits.

Determine Your Admission Category

  • You are a freshman if you have not enrolled in any college or online institution since high school
  • You are a transfer student if you have taken any college or online courses after high school

Steps to Apply

  1. Speak with your Educational Services Officer or counselor before enrolling
  2. Visit the Freshman Guide to Admissions or Transfer Student Guide to Admissions to complete the application process

After admission, attend an Orientation Session to learn about:

  • Registering for classes
  • Placement tests, student ID setup, and email activation
  • Meeting with academic advisers

Students using a GI Bill benefit are REQUIRED to attend one of the offered "breakout" sessions during their Orientation. Parent's are NOT required to attend.

Steps for Certification

  1. After registering for classes, students should submit the required Core and Term-specific Documents below before their first term starts
  2. Certification of enrollments will begin being submitted to the VA 2–3 weeks before classes start
  3. Requests for Basic Allowance for Housing (CH33) and housing stipends (CH35) are submitted to the VA at the beginning of each term
  4. After each term's add/drop date, requests for Tuition & Fees (CH33) will be submitted to the VA, and non-resident tuition scholarships (applicable to dependents using a GI Bill benefit and all Veterans whether or not they are using a GI Bill benefit) will be awarded to students' Financial Aid awards, as applicable

Required: the following Core Documents should be submitted to veterans@olemiss.edu after Orientation but before a student's first term begins. Core Documents should be submitted in one email as attachments. Core Documents will only be accepted from students' Ole Miss email accounts - documents will not be accepted from parents or non-Ole Miss email accounts.

Here are the primary benefits available to veterans and service members:

  • Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30): Offers up to 36 months of education benefits for eligible active-duty service members or veterans.
  • Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33): Covers tuition, fees, a housing allowance, and a stipend for books and supplies.
  • Vocational Rehab & Employment (Chapter 31): Available to veterans with a service-connected disability.
  • Selected Reserve GI Bill (Chapter 1606): Provides benefits to drilling reservists or guardsmen.
  • REAP (Chapter 1607): For Reservists activated after September 11, 2001.
  • Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35): For dependents of veterans who have died or are disabled.

  • GI Bill Benefits

    The Department of Veteran Affairs determines the costs covered by VA education benefits, not the University of Mississippi. Students may be eligible for money to help pay for housing, books, and class supplies.

  • Tuition Assistance for the U.S. Army

    The Tuition Assistance (TA) Program offers financial aid for off-duty education to support Soldiers’ professional and personal development. Eligible participants include active-duty Soldiers, Army National Guard, Army Reserve Soldiers on active duty, and TPU Soldiers under U.S. Code Title 10 or Title 32.

  • Navy College Program Tuition Assistance

    Tuition Assistance (TA) is the Navy’s primary program for funding voluntary education, covering tuition costs for eligible active-duty Sailors pursuing courses off duty at accredited institutions. TA supports classroom, distance learning, and independent study for certificate, associate, bachelor’s, and master’s programs listed on the DOD TA DECIDE platform and reflected on college transcripts.

  • Air Force Federal Tuition Assistance

    The Military Tuition Assistance (MilTA) Program supports Airmen and Guardians in achieving professional and personal self-development goals through off-duty education. Eligible participants include active-duty service members, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve personnel under U.S. Code Title 10 or Title 32.

  • Coast Guard Federal Tuition Assistance

    Tuition Assistance (TA) is the Coast Guard's program for funding off-duty education, covering tuition costs for active-duty and reserve personnel at accredited institutions that have signed the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding (DOD MOU). TA supports classroom and distance learning courses measured in semester, quarter, or clock hours, including those leading to eligible certificate programs.

  • Mississippi National Guard State Education Assistance Program

    State Education Assistance Program (SEAP) is a general scholarship for MSNG service members attending accredited institutions of higher learning within the State of Mississippi for Undergraduate Studies and Career and Technical training.
