VA Benefits & Study Abroad

Keep up to date on the requirements and limitations for using your VA benefits while studying abroad.

Steps to Take Before You Go Abroad

If you're utilizing your VA education benefits, there are some things you need to do before your departure.

Overcommunicate and do so early. Let our office know you want to go abroad before you depart. We are more than happy to help you understand how and what you can receive from the VA for classes taken abroad.

Reach out to us at veterans@olemiss.edu

If you speak to your Academic Advisor and discover that the courses you plan to take abroad are not applicable to your degree progress, the VA will not pay. If you take a Study Abroad trip for courses that are not required by your degree, you will be responsible for any charges incurred. The courses must be required and applicable to your degree in order to utilize VA funding.

Make sure your advisor is aware of every step in the process, as they will need to sign documents that affirm your course selections.

You should let your Study Abroad Advisor know if you plan to utilize VA Education Benefits. In general, the more they know about you, the more they can support you.

Study Abroad Applications are due on the following dates:

  • 1st Wednesday of March - for the following Fall Semester
  • 1st Wednesday of October - for the following Spring Semester

If you are planning a trip, don't wait until the last minute. Leave yourself some time to work out the details before you reach the deadline.

You will need the following documents:

  • A Term Approval Form (TAF) as if you were taking the courses here at Ole Miss
  • Your Course Approval Form (CAF) from Study Abroad showing the course transferability and credit assessment
  • A Second TAF that reflects your current UM schedule (Some SA programs enroll you in GLS 111 as a placeholder)
  • An emailed statement from your academic advisor that these courses are required for your degree and were not offered here at the UM campus during this semester in memorandum format

NOTE: Your initial TAF will have to match your CAF from SA. If the courses are not identical on both, then it may reduce your hours.
