Freshman Orientation

Orientation helps students and families get familiar with campus life, connect with resources, and prepare for a successful start to their Ole Miss journey.

Students sit in a circle in front of the Lyceum with two Orientation Leaders during a freshman orientation session.

Welcome to Orientation!

The Ole Miss orientation leaders and the staff would like to welcome you to our family. We are excited you have chosen Ole Miss, and we look forward to the journey ahead. The freshman orientation programs are designed for freshmen students and their family members. These sessions will provide students and their family members with an opportunity to get acclimated to this new campus.

Freshmen Orientation Holds

When signing up for orientation using myOleMiss, a student may encounter a series of “holds” in the registration process. The only holds that will prevent you from signing up for orientation are Housing and Health Holds.

This hold must be cleared in order to register for an orientation session. A housing hold means that you need to apply for and pay your deposit for student housing. This must be done before you can register for orientation.

NOTE: Transfers should not have a housing hold; however, if you do, please contact the Student Housing Office at 662-915-7328. If you are not a freshman or are living within the accepted radius of campus, you can opt-out of on-campus student housing.

This hold must be cleared in order to register for an orientation session. A health hold means that you need to fill out and submit the required health forms to the Student Health Center. Note this hold does not go away instantly, as it typically will take 1 to 2 business days for the hold to clear. For assistance contact the Student Health Center at 662-915-7274.

This hold will be cleared at orientation, and you do not need to schedule an appointment ahead of time. Your hold will be cleared after you meet with your adviser as a part of the orientation process. The orientation staff will schedule this for you. You do not need to contact the adviser beforehand.

This simply means that you have not yet signed up for an orientation session. When you do, the hold will be lifted automatically. If you are a new student and choose not to attend an orientation session, then you will be unable to register for classes and will still be charged the orientation fee. The only way to register for classes is to come to an orientation session and meet with your adviser then.

How to Register for Freshman Orientation

You can register for summer orientation, AFTER you have completed/paid your housing application and turned in your health records.

Very Important: You MUST complete your housing application, pay the application fee, and turn in your immunization records before you can register for orientation. See Admitted Students for more information.

Registering for Summer Orientation:

  • Sign in with your WebID and password.
  • Once you log in, select the Orientation tab in the main tool bar at the top.

    • The system will only show available sessions, so please refrain from making travel arrangements until you receive a confirmation.
  • Complete the form, and click submit.
  • Your orientation fee(s) can be paid online with a credit or debit card (VISA or MasterCard only), or by bank draft. Money orders or checks will not be accepted through the mail. Orientation reservations cannot be completed over the phone.

  • DO NOT make airline or hotel reservations until AFTER you have registered for orientation and a confirmation email is received.
  • A confirmation email will be emailed as soon as payment is received. Please check carefully to verify your session number and the date are correct.

If your plans change after you have registered for an orientation session, please log back into the registration system to change to another session.

Log back into the registration system to add a parent to your session.

Students and family members who do not show up for their reserved orientation session will need to contact our office to rebook them into a different session if the student still plans on attending the University.

All orientation fees (both students and family members) are nonrefundable. Deciding not to attend the University of Mississippi or having your admission rescinded due to poor academic performance does not qualify you to receive a refund of orientation fees. If you decide not to attend Ole Miss, then you are responsible for notifying the Office of Admissions.

Orientation Schedule

Freshman orientation will be a day and a half of programming with two tracks – one for new students and one for parents/family members. The 2024 schedules are linked below for your reference. 2025 schedules will be released at a later date but will follow the same day and a half model.

What to Bring to Orientation

The most important thing to bring is a positive attitude and willingness to participate in the program, but the following will also be helpful:

Staying Overnight on Campus for Orientation

Student Accommodations

Students attending freshman orientation have the option to stay overnight in a residence hall on campus at no cost for the first night of their session. This gives you a chance to experience campus life and connect with other new Rebels!

  • Each room includes two twin-size beds and a private bathroom.

  • Be sure to bring your own linens, pillow, toiletries, and other essentials—these are not provided.

  • If you have a preferred roommate also attending orientation, you can request to room together. If not, a roommate will be randomly assigned.

  • This is only for the first night, so anyone traveling the day before their session would need other accommodations.
  • Note: This overnight stay is only available for freshman sessions. Transfer sessions are one-day only and do not include overnight housing.

Family & Guest Accommodations

If your family plans to stay in Oxford during orientation, we recommend booking a hotel early as availability may be limited.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Check out The Inn at Ole Miss to stay on campus.

  • Look for hotels close to campus for convenience.
  • Explore short-term rentals through platforms like Airbnb or Vrbo.

  • Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are available nearly 24/7 in Oxford. Oxford-University Transit buses are also available if you need transportation to campus.

If you have questions about housing for orientation, feel free to contact us at orientation@olemiss.edu or 662-915-7226.

Before Attending Your Session

Before attending the required orientation, you should:

  • Send your health forms to Student Health Services. You MUST have your health forms turned in, or you will be unable to register for classes at orientation!
  • If you want to order your Student ID ahead of time, send in a photograph of yourself and completed ID form to the ID Center to have your student ID made. You can also get this made in person at your session.
  • Check the orientation website and your Ole Miss email for updates often.
