Technical Services

WHAT WE DO

Build solution based computing by providing the core support elements needed to formulate and deliver technology to students, faculty, and staff.

    Technical Services History

Technical Services was implemented as a new division within the Office of Information Technology in May of 1999. In order to continue meeting the support demands of new ever-changing technologies in an ERP environment, core technical support groups were combined. The goal of Technical Services is to use this combination of technical talent to increase the overall quality of service delivered to students, faculty, and staff. Five basic groups initially comprised Technical Services. Network Management installs, configures, and supports the Ethernet switching systems and wireless services that deliver network access and applications to the campus. This includes shared/switched 100/1000 Mb access to the desktop with 10 Gb access to the backbone and 10 Gb access to the Internet. Systems Administration installs and supports operating systems and applications on a wide variety of platforms that include but are not limited to the Campus E-mail Server, Campus Web Server, SAP ERP Systems, and High Performance Computing Systems. Electronic Maintenance provides hardware support for desktop/workgroup computing and printing. Operations provides monitoring for all systems and administration of the departmental security system. Network Server Support supplies hardware support for UNIX servers, Windows servers, ERP systems, and High Performance Computing Systems.

Within the first year of operation a Basis Administration group was initiated within Technical Services. This group if focused on providing installation and administration support for the SAP landscape. The landscape is currently comprised of systems that include Development, Quality Assurance, and Production for Student LifeCycle Management, Business Intelligence, Portal Services and a number of other supporting technologies. The Technical Services staff continually evaluates methods for increased productivity. As a result, Network Server Support was combined with Systems Administration in late 2003 to provide a more seamless approach to Data Center support. The division continues to operate with five defined service areas.

As a partner in the University's vision to improve information availability and accessibility, the goals of Technical Services focus on providing stable computing environments that empower users by enabling technology.
