Who Can Vote Absentee and Why?
In Mississippi, absentee voting allows eligible voters to cast their ballots by mail or in person before Election Day if they can't vote at their polling place.
- Being away for college is a common reason for absentee voting. Other reasons include being 65 or older, having a disability, or active military service.
There are two ways to vote absentee in Mississippi, in person or through the mail.
In-Person Absentee Voting
If you'd like to vote in person, you need to go to a designated location (such as a county clerk office) to fill out and submit your absentee ballot in person.
- In-person absentee voting is held between September 23rd and November 2nd at local county circuit clerk's office.
- Make sure you arrive during normal business hours.
- If voting on the last two Saturdays before the election (October 10th or Novermber 2nd) you can arrive between 8 AM - 12 PM.
Mail-In Absentee Voting
To vote absentee in Mississippi, voters need to request an absentee ballot from their county clerk office, complete it according to instructions, and return it by mail or in person.
- Request your ballot by September 23rd (09/23).
- Ballots must be notarized before submission. To make notarization easier on you, the University Registrar Office offers free notary services.
- Postmark and mail your ballot at least one week prior to election day (ballots must be received by November 13th (11/13).
