Communication Access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students and Community Members
The University of Mississippi is deeply committed to ensuring full communication access for all members of its community, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors who are Deaf or hard of hearing. In alignment with this commitment, Student Disability Services (SDS) coordinates a range of services designed to provide equal access to university programs and activities.
SDS facilitates the provision of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters, real-time captioning (CART), and assistive listening devices for academic and university-related needs. These services help ensure that Deaf and hard of hearing individuals can fully engage with classroom instruction and other essential university experiences.
SDS also works closely with the University’s Digital Accessibility Solutions office, which provides post-production captioning of video and audio files. If you require assistance with captioning videos, please contact that office at accessibility@olemiss.edu.
For non-classroom related university events, meetings, or activities, individuals may request communication access through the SDS Rebel Access portal. Once a request is submitted, the Coordinator of Communication Access will follow up to gather additional information about the event to determine appropriate accommodations.
Important Note: To ensure the availability of services, requests should be made as early as possible. ASL interpreter availability is limited in the region, and scheduling priority is given to classroom interpreting and direct student-related services. SDS will make every effort to meet accommodation needs based on available resources.
To submit a request communication access services, please visit the SDS Rebel Access portal and complete the required form. For more information, contact Julie Seawright, Coordinator of Communication Access, at julies@olemiss.edu or 662-915-7128.
