New Federal Mandatory Research Security Training Requirement
In alignment with recent federal mandates, including the NSF’s Important Notice No. 149, NIH’s Notice NOT-OD-25-133, and the Department of Energy’s FAL 2025-022, the University of Mississippi will implement a mandatory Research Security Training for all individuals involved in sponsored research.
All named project personnel must complete the training prior to submitting any proposals prior to these deadlines:
- DOE – effective immediately
- NIH - October 1, 2025
- NSF - October 10, 2025
(Other agencies will announce deadlines soon.)
The training can be accessed through the CITI Program, will be composed of two modules, take a total of about 2 hours, and the topics will include: risks of foreign interference, guidelines for international collaborations and travel, cybersecurity awareness for researchers, proper disclosure of outside activities and financial interests, protection of research data and intellectual property, and U.S. export control regulations.
This federal initiative is part of a nationwide effort to safeguard the U.S. research enterprise from security risks and to ensure continued eligibility for federal funding. General UM policy for the training, frequency, and applicability is being developed.
