Scientific Diving Program

Dive safely and confidently with the resources and expertise of our Scientific Diving Program.

Dive into research with our scientific diving program

Scientific diving is a unique and critical tool for advancing research in marine and aquatic environments. The University of Mississippi's Scientific Diving Program (SDP) equips researchers with the skills and support needed to conduct safe, effective underwater research, adhering to the highest standards of practice.

The SDP is the university’s platform for facilitating underwater research, offering specialized training and certification for faculty and students. As an organizational member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), the program provides a gateway to innovative research opportunities worldwide, ranging from marine biology to underwater archaeology.

Advancing marine research through technical diving expertise

Although the program is modest in size, with 5-10 active scientific divers each year, our research groups have earned international recognition for their contributions to marine sciences and advancements in technical diving methods, including mixed gas, rebreathers, and specialized techniques for cave, ice, and deep diving.

The Scientific Diving Program is dedicated to ensuring the success and safety of diving research conducted by UM faculty and students. Supporting projects across the globe, the program offers both SCUBA and technical mixed gas diving capabilities, along with comprehensive training and logistical support for funded research initiatives. Certification as a scientific diver at UM can be achieved through the university’s sanctioned research diving course or by presenting proof of equivalent training from another AAUS organizational member.
