Be Smart in an Active Shooter Situation: Avoid, Deny, Defend
In the event of an active shooter, knowing how to respond can save lives. The “Avoid, Deny, Defend” program provides a clear, actionable framework to help you protect yourself and others during such a crisis.
Here's what you need to know:
Avoid
Your first priority is to avoid the danger if possible.
- Stay Aware. Always be mindful of your surroundings and know your escape routes. In an emergency, time is critical.
- Escape Immediately. If you hear gunshots or see an armed individual, don’t wait to immediately move away from the source of danger. Use your preidentified escape routes or any available exits.
- Encourage Others. If it’s safe to do so, encourage others to leave with you, but don’t delay your own escape if they are hesitant.
Deny
If escaping isn’t possible, the next step is to deny the shooter access to your location.
- Lock and Barricade. If you’re in a room, lock the door and use heavy furniture or other objects to barricade it. This can slow down or stop the shooter from entering.
- Turn Off Lights and Silence Devices. Darken the room and silence your phone to make it appear unoccupied.
- Stay Hidden. Move away from doors and windows and stay out of sight. Find cover behind solid objects that could protect you from gunfire.
Defend
As a last resort, if you are confronted by the shooter and your life is in immediate danger, be prepared to defend yourself.
- Commit to Action. Use any available objects as improvised weapons, fire extinguishers, chairs, or even your own belongings.
- Work Together. If you’re with others, coordinate your actions to overwhelm the attacker. Collective action increases your chances of disarming or neutralizing the threat.
- Fight with Determination. Your goal is to incapacitate the shooter. Be aggressive and fully commit to your actions.
