About the Big Event

From school spirit to organizations, academics, tradition, and innovation, the University of Mississippi has always thought big. Community service is no exception.

UMSFusion, an annual service event developed in 2003, gave University of Mississippi students the opportunity to volunteer in the Lafayette-Oxford-University community. The event continued to grow, showing that students are committed to assisting and serving our community.

After visiting Texas A&M University and seeing their day of service, student leaders and staff at Ole Miss were excited about the idea of a large-sale, one-day community service project. The Big Event launched in 2010, with ASB student leaders and the staff of the Office of the Dean of Students making the decision to take service to the next level.

The first year, over 1,200 students participated, braving spring storms. The 2012 Big Event witnessed a vast increase in volunteers and projects, with over 3,000 students signing up to complete over 300 initiatives. Today, the Big Event continues to make an impact and connect students with our local community.

The Big Event allows our students to serve the local community, saying thank you to the Oxford and Lafayette County areas that support them and building relationships with community members.

It is also our hope that students will be inspired by their participation in the Big Event to volunteer for other service projects in the future.
