Education Specialist in Counselor Education (Ed.S) with emphasis in Play Therapy
Description
The Education Specialist in Counselor Education (Ed.S) with emphasis in Play Therapy and its Clinic for Outreach and Personal Enrichment (COPE), an approved center for play therapy education by the Association for Play Therapy, is pleased to offer a post-master's specialist degree in counselor education for those interested in play therapy and becoming credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist. This program is provided online for national and international students. This two-year program consists of a fall to spring curriculum with a four-semester clinical practicum experience and an intensive supervision residency. Students will complete 25 credit hours, record at least 350 hours of play therapy sessions, and receive 35 hours of supervision from Registered Play Therapist-Supervisors. An onsite residency is required for three days in the summer semester. The residency is held at The University of Mississippi at the Counselor Education Clinic for Outreach and Personal Enrichment.
Admission Requirements
- License/Certification: Must hold current and active individual state license (or certification) to engage in either independent or supervised clinical mental health practice. Licenses accepted include LPC, LCSW, LMFT, LSC, LLP, as well as licensed Psychiatrist and psychiatric/ mental health nursing. Licensed school counselors must submit their state certificates from their State Department of Education
- Educational Degrees: Must have earned a master’s or higher mental health degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Must have also completed designated core graduate coursework, i.e. ethics, child development, theories of personality, principles of psychotherapy, and child/adolescent psychopathology.
- Must have completed at least 1 year and 1,000 hours of supervised postmaster’s clinical experience
- Proof of current professional liability insurance
- Access to at least 10 hours of play therapy experiences per week

Career Opportunities
Work as a play therapist is greatly influenced by who you are working with and what type of services you are providing. You might be working with individuals or small groups. Which means you could work at a school, clinic, community, or medical center. Regardless of the setting, you will be assessing children and working with them through a variety play therapy skills and techniques.
