Ways To Give To The OMWC

Founded in 2000, the Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy provides scholarships and mentorship to develop student leaders committed to improving the university and society.

Why to Give

The Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy, an innovative and groundbreaking scholarship and mentorship program, began in February 2000 when an accomplished group of female leaders and philanthropists committed to make a dramatic impact on the lives of University of Mississippi students. Now, the Council provides scholarships to assist selected young women and men with college expenses. Moreover, Council members mentor these scholars from their freshman year through graduation, giving them the opportunity to develop life skills by participating in leadership training, community service projects, cultural enrichment activities and alumni networking.

The Council continually seeks resources to accomplish its goal of identifying and nurturing excellent students who are committed to improving the university while on campus and to transforming society at large after graduation.

Here’s how you can invest in the lives of students – the young women and men who are truly the future of our university, state, nation and world:

Where to Give

Places where you could give donations or services to the Ole Miss Women's Council.

An endowed scholarship educates students in perpetuity. Your gift of $125,000 will establish a general scholarship open to all students while a gift of $250,000 allows you to designate the award for students in a particular field of study or from a specific geographic region. Scholarships may be named in honor or memory of a loved one and your name as the donor will be permanently displayed in our Rose Garden.

To discuss an Endowed Scholarship, contact Suzanne Helveston, development associate, at 662.915.2956 or shelveston@olemiss.edu.

Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders

We stand on the shoulders of the people who’ve helped us in life, those who guided, nurtured and motivated us – our mentors. We consider ourselves fortunate to have had people like this along our paths.

And if we have the opportunity to help fill that role for someone else, the cycle of rewarding experiences continues. The Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy (OMWC) offers to a select group of University of Mississippi students intentional encounters that provide exceptional support to scholars who will go on to become tomorrow’s leaders.

Scholarship. Leadership. Mentorship.

The OMWC scholarship program is open to both men and women studying on the Oxford campus. In addition to financial assistance, Women’s Council scholarships include leadership and mentorship components. It’s these three pillars – scholarship, leadership and mentorship – that make our program remarkable. We believe in fostering personal connections and offering leadership training, career development and cultural experiences to help students grow.

Who Are Women’s Council Scholars?

Our students receive scholarships of $40,000 for four years of undergraduate study funded by annual income from scholarship endowments. They show ethical and caring behavior through a deep desire to help others. OMWC scholars participate in a series of leadership symposiums and utilize their abilities from leadership training in campus-wide organizations.

Why Give?

One-hundred percent of your gift, or membership contribution, goes directly to support programs designed for our OMWC scholars, including monthly leadership dinners, lunch and learns, an annual leadership conference, scholar trips and enrichment activities. Our innovative program is preparing students for meaningful lives and rewarding careers.

What Does My Gift Support?

The entirety of your gift goes directly to programming for OMWC scholarship recipients. Our scholars meet weekly with Women’s Council staff mentors as well as life and career mentors from the broader Ole Miss community. Scholars also learn and grow by participating in cultural and travel adventures.

Help Us Thrive. Join the Rose Society.

Support the Women’s Council by joining the Rose Society. You can join with an annual gift of at least $1,000, which is payable outright or monthly. Not able to commit at the Rose Society level, but still want to participate? Ask about giving at the Rose Bud level with an annual membership contribution of $500 (open only to donors under 30 years old).

Your membership may be made in your name or to honor a special person in your life. Rose Society members are invited to Women’s Council programs, including a signature annual event held specifically to thank donors.

Today, you can join the Rose Society and support OMWC Scholars. Contact Suzanne Helveston, development associate, at 662.915.2956 and omwc@olemiss.edu for more information.

The Ole Miss Women’s Council Giving Society for International Studies or Internships

The Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy sponsors innovative programs that attract and develop students through leadership, scholarship, and mentorship. Because the classroom is just one dimension of a student’s learning experience, the Council recently endorsed The Global Leadership Circle. This international studies/internship component will enable students to expand their horizons, appreciate other countries and cultures, and continue their commitment to making the world a better place.

Becoming a Member of The Global Leadership Circle

Your gift of $25,000 ($5,000 per year for five years), which may be named in honor or memory of a loved one, covers expenses for scholars pursuing international studies or internships.

The Selection Process

OMWC scholars will be eligible provided they have at least a 3.0 GPA, which must be maintained whether studying internationally or interning. The application will be available online or in the office of the OMWC Program Coordinator. If there are more scholarships available than applicants, the Office of International Studies will award the available scholarships to non-OMWC students.

How to Donate to The Global Leadership Circle

Please complete the pledge agreement to formalize your financial commitment to become a member of The Global Leadership Circle. Your gift is $5,000 per year of 5 consecutive years and will be distributed to student awardees, as well as help to build a permanent endowment for assuring future growth of this program.

Council scholarships or program endowments may be established through planned gifts, including simple bequests or the designation of the OMWC as a life insurance or retirement plan beneficiary.

WILLS AND LIVING TRUSTS

Interested in helping the university but aren’t ready to write a check or part with your assets today? A simple, flexible, and versatile way to ensure your support for years to come is by making a gift outlined in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS

Name Ole Miss as a beneficiary to receive assets such as retirement plans and life insurance policies after your lifetime. It’s an easy and flexible way to give. You aren’t locked into the choices you make today; you can review and adjust beneficiary designations any time. And because Ole Miss is tax-exempt the university receives all, rather than just a portion, of your gift.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES

To establish a charitable gift annuity, make your gift to Ole Miss and in exchange receive a fixed annual dollar amount for life. The principal remaining after your lifetime will then benefit the University of Mississippi program of your choice.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS

If you have built a sizeable estate and are also looking for ways to receive reliable payments, you may want to explore setting up a charitable remainder trust. Benefits include the potential for a partial charitable income tax deduction; the potential for increased income; and up-front capital gains tax avoidance. This can be done two ways. An annuity trust pays you, each year, the same dollar amount you choose at the start. Your payments stay the same, regardless of fluctuations in trust investments. A unitrust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. The amount of your payments is re-determined annually.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER

If you are 70.5 years old or older, you can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to the university without having to pay income taxes on the money. Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see your philanthropic dollars at work and jump-starting the legacy you would like to leave.

GIVE NOW

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST

Do you want to benefit from the tax savings that result from supporting Ole Miss while maintaining assets that you’d like your family to receive someday? You can have it both ways with a charitable lead trust. You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select.

MEMORIALS AND TRIBUTE GIFTS

Establish a memorial or tribute gift is a meaningful way to honor a loved one’s life or celebrate a special occasion while supporting Ole Miss. Your memorial or tribute gift will expand the legacy of your loved one and make a difference in the lives of our students.

ENDOWED GIFTS

You have the power to help safeguard the future of the University of Mississippi by making an endowed gift. Your gift is an investment in Ole Miss’ future, helping our academic community grow for years to come. Create a new endowment or add to an existing endowment. The principal is invested and a portion of the principal’s earnings are used each year to support its mission. Endowments begin at the $25,000 level.

Samantha Simpson, Corinth, MS

"As an OMWC scholar, my growth has not only been invested in academically but also my personally. OMWC has helped strengthen my individuality as a scholar, philanthropist, mentor, mentee, and musician throughout my time at Ole Miss. Not only am I going to graduate in two semesters with a degree debt-free, but I will be able to step into the workplace with confidence through the legacy that the OMWC has paved for my generation!”

Emelia O’Neil, Smithton, IL

"Having the opportunity to be a part of something as unique as the Ole Miss Women’s Council has been a huge blessing for me both personally and professionally. The resources and experiences that have been offered to me have changed my college experience considerably and provided me with a great support system here in Oxford. The outstanding mentorship program has been one of my favorite parts of the Ole Miss Women’s Council thus far, as well as forming relationships with fellow scholars through Red Plate Suppers and scholar trips. I am so grateful to be a part of something so special here at Ole Miss, and I know that this program and these people will stay with me long after I graduate.”
