What We Do

Economics majors use abstract theory to help analyze real-world
problems. They gain a broad understanding in analysis, statistics,
mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written
communication—all skills that are in demand by employers.

Josh Hendrickson

Welcome from the Chair

Economics is a social science that studies how people make decisions under scarcity. The world has finite resources—how do societies decide how to allocate them? From this basic premise, we can explore questions like: How does resource allocation differ between markets and government? Why are some countries rich and others poor? Why do airlines charge different prices to different people? Can our understanding of firms explain how the mafia operates? What causes inflation?

Economics provides a solid foundation for careers in business, law, and government. We offer two undergraduate emphases: Law and Economics for students interested in law school, and Financial Economics for those pursuing financial or quantitative careers. Our graduate program prepares students for careers in academia, government, and the private sector.

We have an outstanding faculty dedicated to both teaching and research. Our goal is not to tell students what to think, but to equip them with the tools to understand the economic way of thinking. This prepares them for a broad spectrum of careers with critical thinking and quantitative skills.
