| TYPES OF AID | Do courses at the 5500 level or above (considered graduate) count for purposes of this aid? | Do courses at the 5000-5499 level (considered undergraduate) count for purposes of this aid? | What is full-time for these awards? (Note that undergraduate definitions still apply – not graduate.) | Can awards be given if the student is less than full-time? |
| Federal Title IV Aid – (e.g. Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, TEACH Grant, and Direct Loans) | No | Only if they meet outstanding requirements for the major OR are approved to fulfill an unmet elective. Financial Aid must confirm before disbursement. | 12 credit hours | It is possible. Direct Loans can be received if enrolled for at least 6 qualifying hours, but they will be proportionately reduced based on the hours that do count for federal aid as compared to a full-time schedule. Grants are available for less- than-half-time enrollment. However, they are typically prorated, too. |
| State Aid (e.g MTAG, MESG, and MS HELP) | Yes | Yes | 12 credit hours (If a graduate level course is used to qualify, Financial Aid will manually disburse the awards since the course is not recognized as undergraduate.) | No, unless approved for an exception by the state office. Students with 6-14 credit hours remaining to graduate may appeal for their last term only. |
| Institutional Aid e.g. Academic Excellence/Merit Scholarships, Community College Transfer Scholarships, and UM Foundation awards) | Yes | Yes | 12 credit hours (If a graduate level course is used to qualify, Financial Aid will manually disburse the awards since the course is not recognized as undergraduate.) | No |
