Biography

Derek, a licensed CPA (TN), is in his final year of the Ph.D. in accountancy program. He teaches introductory and upper-level accounting courses at the Patterson School of Accountancy, including Introduction to Accounting Principles I & II (Accy 201/202) and Cost Control (Accy 309). Derek's primary research interests are in the impact of executive managers on firm performance and how it affects investors' valuations of these companies. His dissertation was selected as a finalist for the university-wide Three Minute Thesis Competition, and he is the 2022 winner of the Graduate Achievement Award for the Ph.D. in Accountancy program. 

Outside of the university, Derek has held affiliated faculty roles at the University of Virginia and the University of South Carolina and was a full-time faculty member at Erskine College. He is an active member of the management section of the American Accounting Association (AAA) and an academic member of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) honor society. Derek is also a fellow of the Heritage Foundation Academy. Prior to academia, he was an auditor for HCA Healthcare and interned as a financial analyst for Schneider Electric (Square D). Outside of work, Derek enjoys spending time with his wife (Lindsay) and three children (Jude, Thomas Ren, and Maranatha).
