This story is part of the 2025 Journey to Commencement series, which celebrates the pinnacle of the academic year by highlighting University of Mississippi students and their outstanding academic and personal journeys from college student to college graduate.

An operations coordinator in the aerospace studies department, Vernita Ivy saw the University of Mississippi not just as a workplace, but as an opportunity to fulfill her educational aspirations. The Taylor native and first-generation student embraced the chance to obtain a degree while working, a decision that would change her life.

As she completes her degree in May alongside her daughter Le’Catherine — both receiving degrees in multidisciplinary studies — Ivy’s journey embodies perseverance and purpose. During her time at Ole Miss, she has enjoyed connecting with classmates across generations, engaging in insightful conversations and proudly strolling through the Grove.

Q&A with Vernita J. Ivy

What drew you to your major?

I work here at Ole Miss and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain a degree while working. As a first-generation college student, pursuing this multi-disciplinary approach with minors in social work, psychology and recreational administration allowed me to explore different areas that interested me and build a versatile foundation of knowledge.

Were there any challenges you overcame during your college journey?

There were definitely times when I felt like giving up and throwing in the towel. Balancing work responsibilities while pursuing education presented significant challenges.

However, these obstacles ultimately strengthened my resolve and taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and self-belief that extend far beyond the classroom.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

My daughters, Le’Tosha James and Le’Catherine Ivy, have been my most influential supporters throughout this journey. They provided me with the support and motivation to persevere, especially when I felt like giving up.

Their encouragement reminded me of my goals and helped me push through the challenges I faced.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I plan on continuing my education by obtaining my master’s degree in higher education. My experience at Ole Miss has ignited a passion for learning that I’m eager to pursue further, and I'm excited to see where this next educational chapter takes me.

In one sentence, what would you tell future Ole Miss students about your experience here?

My experience at Ole Miss proved that it is never too late to chase your dreams, grow through learning and find purpose in every stage of life.
