Brief Bio
Dr. Colin Jackson, Professor of Biology at UM, received his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in 1999 and joined the UM faculty in 2006. He specializes in the study of microbiomes, microbial ecology, community bioinformatics, microbial diversity, and environmental microbiology, and has written numerous journal articles. He oversees the Jackson Lab for Microbial Ecology which has ongoing research on spatial and temporal patterns in microbiomes of plants, animals, and natural ecosystems such as soils, rivers, and wetlands. Dr. Jackson's research has been supported by agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and he was awarded a National Science Foundation grant in 2018 to explore interactions between microorganisms and freshwater mussels in an effort to better understand the Earth's biodiversity and how aquatic ecosystems function.
