Brief Bio
Dr. Hunter A. Taylor is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Education (SOE) and a Recruiter for the Mississippi Teacher Corps (MTC) at the University of Mississippi (UM). He is also the SOE's Inaugural Scholar-in-Residence for the Oxford School District and an Affiliated Faculty Member in the Center for the Study of Southern Culture. In these roles, he teaches and advises administrators, teachers, coaches, and policymakers from across the state. Since joining MTC's staff in the summer of 2017, Taylor has helped lead efforts to revitalize its recruitment strategy, strengthen the admissions process, solidify its teaching alignment, and seek out creative partnerships within the state. Some of the team's biggest achievements in this time frame have been the launching of a new website, logo, and social media campaign; the addition of the MTC Advisory Board; a renewed partnership with Jackson Public Schools (JPS); and record highs for teacher retention and cohort diversity within the program. Taylor is also a former corps member (Class of '06), who taught math and coached multiple sports in JPS. Currently, Taylor serves on six different Advisory Boards, including the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science and the University of Arkansas's Academy for Educational Equity. He is a Guest Lecturer in the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin), co-founder of the leadership consulting group, Coach & Doc, LLC, and is a committee member for the Chancellor's University Lecture Series. In 2018, the George W. Bush Institute & the William J. Clinton Foundation named him a Presidential Leadership Scholar for his work in education. He was one of 59 leaders chosen from across the country. Most recently, Taylor launched the podcast, Same Side of the Tracks, where he and a colleague interview a diverse guest list of inspiring leaders from across the country about their favorite music and the memories they invoke, and he served as one of the University of Mississippi's featured TEDx speakers for its 2021 conference on Resilience. He received his B.B.A. from UT-Austin, his M.A.T. from the University of Mississippi, and his Ed.D. from Baylor University. Before making the leap into academia, Taylor spent 10 years as a men's basketball coach and two years as a U.S. Senate staffer. He lives in Oxford, MS, with his wife, Brittany, and their three sons, Yates, Simms, & Knox.
