Ikhlas Khan is a natural products researcher and director of the National Center for Natural Products Research.

Research Interests

  • Phytomedicine Program: Efforts in research related to Medicinal plants, Authentication, cultivation, creating repository. Isolation of standards; bio-guided fractionation; Analysis of pesticides/heavy metals in Herbal Products and dietary supplements; Analytical fingerprinting for standardization of herbal products; Bioanalytical approach to improvement of product quality and safety.
  • Drug Discovery Program: Isolation and characterization of active constituents with significant biological activity; Development of analytical methods for phytochemical characterization of biologically active natural products; Metabolism of natural products and drugs and the role of metabolism in biological activity; Chiral separation of antimalarial drugs of aminoquinoline class; Application of analytical methods in Drug metabolism and preclinical studies of chiral drug candidates, Control of plant growth and development by natural products.

Biography

Dr. Ikhlas A. Khan, he received his B.Sc. Chemistry in 1980 and a M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry in 1982 from Aligarh Muslim Univ., Aligarh, India and Ph.D, 1987 from Inst. fur Pharmaceutische Biol. Munich, W. Germany. He did his postdoctoral studies at Swiss Federal Inst. of Tech. (ETH) Zurich.

He began with the Univ. of MS in 1992 as a research scientist. He became a Research Assist. Prof. in 1995, promoted to Research Assoc. Prof. and Dir. of the FDA program in 2001, Asst. Dir. of the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR) in Oct. 2002 and to full Professor status in July 2005. Promoted to Director of NCNPR 2017.

His work at the University of Mississippi has led to several additional academic and research appointments: Director of the FDA Center of Excellence, Professor in the Dept. of Pharmacognosy; U.S. director of the Sino-US TCM Research Center; director of the Center for Research of Indian Systems of Medicine (CRISM); and coordinator for NCNPR efforts at the Center for Water and Wetlands Resources. His primary research interests include analytical fingerprinting for standardization of herbal products, and bio-analytical approaches to improvement of product quality and safety. He has authored/co-authored over 850 research articles. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international venues. His work on botanical supplements has helped to shape and lead new developments in academia, industry and government organizations.

He has received numerous awards, including most recently: UM Distinguished Professor Award, 2018; The Wiley Award, AOAC Int., 2018; Qihuang International Prize, China Asso. of Chinese Medicine, 2017; Outstanding Contributions in TCM Analysis & Quality Standards, 2017; Mark Blumenthal Herbal Community Builder Award, ABC, 2017; Cumberland Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
