Josie Burks

Biography

Dr. Josie A. Burks is an Instructional Assistant Professor of Management. She earned her Ph.D. in Communication and Information Sciences from the University of Alabama. While a doctoral student at the University of Alabama, she coached entrepreneurship student teams to yearly success in university-wide concept and business plan competitions. She teaches courses in Entrepreneurial Pitching, Negotiation, and Business Communication. Her classroom serves as the ideal location for students wanting to improve their persuasive communication skills prior to entering the corporate landscape or starting their own entrepreneurial venture.

Josie’s research focuses on Entrepreneurial Pitching, Persuasion and Rhetoric, Narrative Building, and Legitimacy.  Outside of the classroom, she works alongside Entrepreneurs, Economic Development, and Executive Professionals to prepare persuasive presentations and pitches for key stakeholders. Her academic papers have been presented at such venues as the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Association, and United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship Annual Conferences.
