Brief Bio
J. Stephen Brewer is Professor of Biology. Dr. Brewer received his Ph.D. in Botany from Louisiana State University in 1994. Following 2 years as a Mellon Foundation and National Science Foundation supported post-doctoral research associate at Brown University in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Mississippi (January 1996). In August 2002, he was awarded tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor. Dr. Brewer has published 34 peer-reviewed papers in the areas of plant ecology and conservation biology and currently has four additional peer-reviewed papers in press. His research has been funded by the USDA Forest Service, NSF, the National Geographic Society, the National Audubon Society, Mississippi Alabama Seagrant, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Dr. Brewer teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in ecology, conservation biology, and statistics, as well as a freshman non-majors course in ecology, evolution, and diversity. He has been an editor for the journals, Ecology and Plant Ecology.
