Research Interests
Dr. Johnson regularly participates in the national debate on real estate through publicly available housing indices, public speaking, and media interaction.
Dr. Johnson and Dr. Charles Hilterbrand have founded the Ole Miss Real Estate Initiative (OMREI). The Initiative has the dual mandates of:
- Recruiting, retaining, and placing the best young real estate talent in the industry
- Producing timely information to enable more informed real estate decision making across all market participants (buyers, sellers, landlords, tenants, lenders, developers, brokers, appraisers, and policy makers, among others).
Biography
Dr. Johnson is a well-known scholar with numerous peer reviewed publications on the U.S. housing market, real estate brokerage, transactional real estate, mortgage markets, and real estate investment. His recent articles have appeared in Real Estate Economics, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Housing Economics, Journal of Real Estate Research, Journal of Housing Research, The Appraisal Journal, Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education, Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management, and Journal of Real Estate Law.
Dr. Johnson has won several Red Pen Awards for outstanding service and contribution to both the Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management and Journal of Housing Research. He is a past editor of the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education and the Journal of Housing Research.
Dr. Johnson is an active member of the American Real Estate Society (ARES). He currently serves on the ARES Board of Directors and is a past President and former Publications Director for the society. In 2023, he was awarded the Ratcliff Award for innovative research.
Dr. Johnson served as the Associate Dean of Graduate programs in FAU’s College of Business from August of 2014 through August of 2024. While at FAU, he was a founding member of the Florida Atlantic University Real Estate Initiative.
Dr. Johnson joins Ole Miss as the Christie Kirkland Walker Chair of Real Estate and Professor of Finance in the Department of Finance this fall semester. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Johnson had over a decade of applied experience in real estate specializing in the marketing of corporate- and lender-owned properties.
