Vitor Pomin

Assistant Professor of Pharmacognosy and Research Assistant Professor in the Research Institute Pharmaceutical Sciences

Vitor Pomin

Dr. Pomin conducts research on glycobiology (mostly sulfated polysaccharides), structural (glyco)biology, medicinal glycoscience, and NMR spectroscopy.

Research Interests

  • Isolation and structural characterization of unique marine sulfated glycans.
  • Biological activities, including anticoagulation and antiviral actions, of novel polysaccharides.
  • Application of NMR spectroscopy in structural (glyco)biology.
  • Studies at the atomic level of the carbohydrate-protein complexes of medical interest.

Biography

Dr. Pomin pursued his undergraduate course in the Institute of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil and graduate studies in Biological Chemistry at Institute of Medical Biochemistry Leopoldo de Meis (IBqM), UFRJ. He received his Diploma of Licentiate, M.S., and Ph.D. in 2003, 2005 and 2008, respectively. After receiving his Ph.D., he pursued a post-doctorate experience at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, University of Georgia, United States, until 2011. After this time and prior to join the School of Pharmacy at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Pomin was Assistant professor of Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry, Glycobiology and NMR Spectroscopy at the same institute he graduated (IBqM/UFRJ). Dr. Pomin has over 80 published articles in peer-reviewed journals, 15 book chapters, and served as main editor in 6 academic/scientific books. He currently serves as an editorial member and frequent ad hoc reviewer of many internationally recognized journals like Biopolymers, Carbohydrate Polymers, Carbohydrate Research, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta-General Subjects, Marine Drugs, Phytochemistry, the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Glycoconjugate Journal, Analytical Chemistry, Glycobiology, Journal of Natural Products, PLOS One, Scientific Reports, European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Reviews and many others. He conducts research on glycobiology (mostly sulfated polysaccharides), structural (glyco)biology, medicinal glycosciences and NMR spectroscopy.
