Biography

Originally from Mexico City, he brings a rich cultural background to his teaching career in the United States. With over 30 years of experience, Edgar has accumulated diverse skills and accomplishments. His educational journey includes a B.A. in Business Administration with a minor in International Marketing and an M.A. in Modern Languages from The University of Mississippi, demonstrating his commitment to business and linguistic studies. Before transitioning to teaching, Edgar gained a unique perspective from his experience as an international sales executive for a furniture manufacturer. His extensive travels worldwide have undoubtedly enriched his understanding of different cultures and languages, a perspective he now shares with his students. In his 12-year teaching career, Edgar has worked with language learners of various age groups, from children as young as three to college-age students. Currently, he is a Lecturer of Spanish at The University of Mississippi, where he undoubtedly brings passion and dedication to his role. Edgar's contributions to the field of language education have been recognized on multiple occasions. His accolades include being named the National Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) in 2018, receiving the Teacher of Excellence award from the Mississippi Foreign Language Association (MFLA) in 2015, and being the recipient of the 2022-2023 Diversity Innovator Award from the University of Mississippi. Furthermore, Edgar plays a significant role in language education advocacy and leadership. He serves as the Executive Director for the Mississippi Foreign Language Association (MFLA) and is the incoming National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL) President. Edgar's involvement in initiatives such as the Mississippi Seal of Biliteracy highlights his commitment to promoting language proficiency among students. Additionally, Edgar is an active speaker and advocate for language learning, participating in various local, regional, national, and international conferences. His dedication to sharing knowledge and fostering language proficiency extends beyond the classroom.
