Dr. Rivera is an Experimental Social Psychologist who examines Lay Beliefs about the Self, Meritocracy and Heritability.

Research Interests

  • How lay-theories (i.e., beliefs people hold about the way the world works) influence the way we approach life and the people around us.
  • How Lay beliefs are shaped by our cultural context and social identities, and their impacts on various individual and interpersonal outcomes (e.g., psychological well-being, decision-making, social perceptions, racial biases, and relationship satisfaction).
  • Lay beliefs about true selves and existential philosophy and cultural psychology.
  • Lay beliefs about American meritocracy and its consequences for diversity and cross-cultural perception.
  • Lay beliefs about the heritability of virtuous character traits and their implication for virtue development, parenting practices, and child-parent relationships.
