Biography
Iwo Maria Labuda, born June 13, 1945 in Poznań, Poland is a Polish-American mathematician whose main interests concerned functional analysis and general topology.
Labuda earned his M.S. in 1969 at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He then obtained a research position at the Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (MIPAS), Poznań Branch, in 1970. He defended his PhD, written under the supervision of Władysław Orlicz, at MIPAS in Warsaw (December 1973) and his Habilitation, also there (February 1978). Nominated an Associate Professor (Docent, February 1980) and tenured at MIPAS. He left Poland in August 1985 for Lawrence, KS, where he was appointed a Visiting Stouffer Professor (at the associate level) at the Math. Department of the University of Kansas in the academic year 1985/86. The next year he moved to Oxford, MS, and the University of Mississippi (UM), where he obtained tenured professorship in 1989. He was the Chair of the Math. Department at the UM since 2008 until his retirement in 2016.
In addition, he has held stipends/grants and visiting positions in Denmark (University of Copenhagen), Canada (University of British Columbia), England (University College, London), Switzerland (ETH Zurich), Kuwait (University of Kuwait), France (Université de Caen, Université de Bourgogne) and the United States (University of Florida, Gainesville and Kent State University, Ohio).
