Biography
Dr. Mirela Ovreiu teaches undergraduate courses in biomechanics, biomedical physiology, biomedical measurement, bioinformatics and biostatistics, and biomedical signal processing. She also serves as faculty advisor to the University of Mississippi Biomedical Engineering Society student chapter. Dr. Ovreiu earned a Doctor of Engineering in Applied Biomedical Engineering through Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Her doctoral research focused on electrocardiographic analysis to predict postoperative atrial fibrillation in cardiac-surgery patients. She also holds an M.S. in Digital Signal Processing and a B.E. in Electronics and Telecommunications with a specialty in medical electronics and informatics from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. Before joining the University of Mississippi, Dr. Ovreiu served as a research associate at the Cleveland Clinic, where her work focused on cardiovascular outcomes research, ECG signal analysis, and prediction of postoperative atrial fibrillation. Her research has included cardiac rhythm analysis, neuro-fuzzy modeling, optimization methods for cardiac-disease diagnosis, and cardiomyopathy detection from ECG features. She is an inventor on U.S. patents related to the prediction and prevention of postoperative atrial fibrillation. Dr. Ovreiu’s teaching and research interests integrate cardiovascular engineering, biomedical signal processing, physiology, quantitative analysis, and student-centered engineering education. She has received multiple honors for teaching and innovation, including the DAISY Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovator Awards from the Cleveland Clinic. She is affiliated with the American Heart Association, IEEE, and the Biomedical Engineering Society.
