I am an assistant professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Mississippi. I teach bioinformatics, biostatistics, and systems biomedicine. My research focuses on applying computational tools, machine-learning and data driven approaches to develop biopharmaceuticals for healthcare challenges, including disease diagnostics and targeted drug-delivery.
Research Interests
My research combines computational techniques and machine learning based approaches to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes, with a particular interest in the role of glycans and glycan-modifying enzymes in human health and disease. develop and use molecular simulations, machine learning, and enhanced sampling techniques to study glycosylation, protein-glycan interactions, and designing molecules such as glycomimetics, peptides and nanoparticles for applications in drug discovery, immunotherapy and targeted delivery.
Biography
Dr. Sushil Mishra is a computational scientist who specializes in glycoscience and biomolecular simulation. He is currently an assistant professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Mississippi. Mishra earned his master’s degree in bioinformatics (2007) from the University of Allahabad, India. He completed his Ph.D. in Biomolecular Chemistry (2013) at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic under the supervision of Prof. Jaroslav Koča, where his research focused on the computational modeling of glycan-protein interactions. After earning his doctorate, Dr. Mishra pursued postdoctoral research at the CEITEC-Central European Institute of Technology (Czech Republic) and RIKEN (Japan), where he contributed to the development of cutting-edge computational tools for glycan modeling and carbohydrate-based drug discovery. Dr. Mishra was a Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Tokyo Biochemical Research Foundation Fellow (2016--2018). He was Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Galway, Ireland (2018-2020). Dr. Mishra was manager of the Computational Chemistry and Bioinformatics Research Core at Glycoscience Center of Research Excellence at the University of Mississippi (2021-2024), where he played a pivotal role in supporting research project leaders, training researchers, and maintaining advanced computational resources The Mishra lab at the University of Mississippi combines advanced computational techniques, such as molecular dynamics simulations, docking, and enhanced sampling, with machine learning and data science to study glycans and their roles in biomedical applications. Dr. Mishra’s work bridges the gap between computational chemistry and experimental glycoscience, aiming to develop innovative solutions to pressing biomedical challenges.
