Goals of the M.S. in Hospitality Management

The goal of the online Master of Science program in Hospitality Management is to prepare scholars and experienced (middle management level) practitioners to advancement of knowledge as it relates to research, education, and operations in hospitality management.

• The master’s program provides students with an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of study and the profession in order to develop more effective research and operational practices, and to qualify for leadership positions in teaching, research, hospitality management, and administration.
• The program does not have any concentrations, emphases, options, specializations, or tracks. In addition to the curriculum linked below, students will be required to complete a academic portfolio in this degree program.

Application Process and Deadline

Applications for admission to the graduate programs must be submitted to the University of Mississippi Graduate School through the online application process.

To properly apply for admission, students must complete and submit:

• An online application completed through the Graduate School website.
• A statement of Purpose not exceeding 1,000 words, which clearly demonstrates your interest in the field, readiness to pursue a graduate degree, academic and professional goals, and how joining the graduate program will help you meet these goals.
  
  In this document, you may also include a statement on how you will contribute to the diversity of the classroom, department, and university community. (See Excellence in Inclusivity). This document should be uploaded as an attachment to the Graduate School online application.
• Names and contact information of academic or professional references should be specified on the online Graduate School application. The letters should speak to the applicant’s readiness and ability to succeed in the graduate program.
  
  The Graduate School’s online reference system sends requests to the recommenders. Two (2) references are required for application to the master’s program, and three (3) references are required for application to the doctoral program.
• Official transcripts from all institutions where a degree was obtained AND from institutions attended for any graduate work sent to the Graduate School.
• Official English proficiency test scores (Only if the applicant’s native language is not English): TOEFL, IELTS, or Pearson’s Test of Academic English scores within 2 years of applying to the graduate program sent to the Graduate School.

Applicant's to the M.S. in Hospitality Services do not need to submit a GRE and can choose to submit a resume or CV. 

After acceptance, applications for graduate assistantship may be submitted online. For questions about the MS in FNS and PhD in NHM programs or online MS in HM program, contact NHM Graduate Program Coordinator  Dr. David Joung. 

Application Deadline

The Online MS in HM program offers a rolling admissions process, meaning we accept and review applications on an ongoing basis throughout the year.

• There are no specific deadlines for applications, allowing prospective students the flexibility to apply when they are ready.
• We encourage early submission to ensure a timely review and the best chance for securing a spot in the program.

Applications are reviewed at the end of each month, and decisions are communicated shortly thereafter.

NHM 615 - Advanced Financial Management in Hospitality

This course provides students both conceptual understanding of financial management and practical use of financial statements by using structured analysis techniques in the hospitality industry. The structure and sequence of topics was carefully planned to serve as a basis to develop knowledge and understanding of financial management methods for analyzing the benefits of various sources of finance and capital investment opportunities, and of the application of management accounting techniques for business planning and control.

NHM 628 - Organizational Behavior in Hospitality

This course provides students a framework for understanding and evaluating hospitality companies’ organizational behavior. The primary focus of the course is on human behavior in the workplace, employee attitudes and satisfaction, human resource laws, organizational structure and culture, employee ethics, and strategies utilized to motivate employees.

NHM 676 - Adv. Hospitality Information Technology

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have emerged as key platforms to facilitate operations, commerce, and communication on a global basis. In the hospitality and tourism industry, the importance of information technology systems has increased tremendously in the past few years – and this trend will certainly continue. The integration of technology systems into the operation, marketing, and management efforts of hospitality and tourism organizations is an important key to success. This integration requires that technology and the overall organizational mission/goals are coordinated to achieve the desired effectiveness. This course is a survey of technology applications, issues, innovations, and trends in the hospitality industry. Emphasis is placed on the role of technology in operations and management of technology as a strategy. The content of this seminar-style course will be facilitated through readings, discussions, field trips, and research projects.
