Earning a Master's Degree in Hospitality Management
The goal of the online Master of Science program in Hospitality Management is to prepare scholars and experienced (middle management level) practitioners to advancement of knowledge as it relates to research, education, and operations in hospitality management.
- The master’s program provides students with an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of study and the profession in order to develop more effective research and operational practices, and to qualify for leadership positions in teaching, research, hospitality management, and administration.
- The program does not have any concentrations, emphases, options, specializations, or tracks. In addition to the curriculum linked below, students will be required to complete an academic portfolio in this degree program.

Other Academic Requirements
Students must complete a final portfolio for degree completion.
Applications for admission to the graduate programs must be submitted to the University of Mississippi Graduate School through the online application process.
To properly apply for admission, students must complete and submit:
- An online application completed through the Graduate School website.
- A statement of Purpose not exceeding 1,000 words, which clearly demonstrates your interest in the field, readiness to pursue a graduate degree, academic and professional goals, and how joining the graduate program will help you meet these goals.
In this document, you may also include a statement on how you will contribute to the diversity of the classroom, department, and university community. (See Excellence in Inclusivity). This document should be uploaded as an attachment to the Graduate School online application. - Names and contact information of academic or professional references should be specified on the online Graduate School application. The letters should speak to the applicant’s readiness and ability to succeed in the graduate program.
The Graduate School’s online reference system sends requests to the recommenders. Two (2) references are required for application to the master’s program, and three (3) references are required for application to the doctoral program. - Official transcripts from all institutions where a degree was obtained AND from institutions attended for any graduate work sent to the Graduate School.
- Official English proficiency test scores (Only if the applicant’s native language is not English): TOEFL, IELTS, or Pearson’s Test of Academic English scores within 2 years of applying to the graduate program sent to the Graduate School.
Applicant's to the M.S. in Hospitality Services do not need to submit a GRE and can choose to submit a resume or CV.
After acceptance, applications for graduate assistantship may be submitted online. For questions about the MS in FNS and PhD in NHM programs or online MS in HM program, contact NHM Graduate Program Coordinator Dr. David Joung.
Application Deadline
The Online MS in HM program offers a rolling admissions process, meaning we accept and review applications on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
- There are no specific deadlines for applications, allowing prospective students the flexibility to apply when they are ready.
- We encourage early submission to ensure a timely review and the best chance for securing a spot in the program.
Applications are reviewed at the end of each month, and decisions are communicated shortly thereafter.

Accelerate Master’s Degree in Hospitality Management
Undergraduate students at UM that are interested in graduate study in Hospitality Management can get a head start through the Accelerated Master’s Degree Program.
Undergraduate students that would like to qualify for the Accelerated Master's Degree Program must meet the following requirements:
- 3.0 minimum GPA overall
- 90 completed credit hours as an undergraduate
Number of credit hours a student can earn towards the graduate degree while completing their undergraduate studies:
- 15 credit hours
Courses undergraduate students in the Accelerated Master's Degree Program can take to earn credit towards the graduate degree:
- NHM 525: Research I – Principles of Research (recommended)
- NHM 526: Statistics I in NHM (recommended)
- NHM 566: Human Resource Development in Services
- NHM 615: Advanced Financial Management in Hospitality
- NHM 620: Global Leadership in Service Organizations
- NHM 624: Advanced Marketing Hospitality Industry
- NHM 627: Topics in Hospitality and Leadership
Remember: Students who fail to reserve 500-level courses for graduate credit at the time they take the course will not receive graduate credit for the course (graduate level work must be completed to earn graduate credit).
- Reserving graduate credit with 500-level courses is required to ensure the Graduate School and instructor know the student must complete graduate credit requirements for the course.
- Students cannot later claim graduate credit for 500-level courses if they did not take the appropriate steps to notify the Graduate School prior to taking the course.
Students must be accepted into the Accelerated Master's Degree Program and complete the requisite Accelerated Master's Degree Program Course Enrollment Form for this degree. The form must be received by the Graduate School (the form requires approval from your Undergraduate Advisor and the Graduate Program Coordinator for Biological Science).
- Students must download and complete the participating program’s specific enrollment form each term. The form must be completed prior to the start of the term.
- The form requires approval from the Undergraduate Advisor and Graduate Program Coordinator.
- By signing the form to approve the enrollment for the semester, the Graduate Program Coordinator is agreeing that the student has been admitted to their Accelerated Master's Degree Program opportunity.
After the Graduate School receives the first approved program-specific enrollment form, the student will be identified as enrolled in the Accelerated Master's Degree Program for that degree.
- Each subsequent term for which the student wishes to earn credit towards the graduate degree while still completing their undergraduate studies, they must submit a registration form prior to the start of the semester.
- Failure to submit the required form on time will mean that the student does not earn graduate credit.
The Accelerated Master's Degree Program Course Enrollment Form must be submitted to the Graduate School by the Graduate Program Coordinator. Until the Graduate School receives the required form, the student is not officially registered for graduate coursework for that term.
