The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

From Wall Street to the kitchen table, companies and individuals manage assets in a fast-paced economy where risks and opportunities thrive. Ole Miss Finance students learn to build corporate balance sheets and investment portfolios that weather market downturns and shine during expansions.

A Finance degree combines business, accounting, technology and statistics. The major uses real world case studies to teach students to think critically about current market trends, challenge the mainstream view, and learn to find opportunity where others see risk.

Graduate Outcomes

Finance majors graduate from Ole Miss with the skills to pursue careers in corporate finance, asset management, investment banking and financial planning.

Experiences Offered

Finance majors will spend time in class addressing real world problems. Students will learn about the daily issues faced by corporate and investment professionals and will work through them using case studies and real world data.

Requirements for the major in finance include the B.B.A. core: Accy 201, 202 (3, 3); Bus 230; Bus 271; Bus 250; Bus 302; Mktg 351; Fin 331; Mgmt 371; Mktg 372; Mgmt 493; MIS 309; 300-level business elective (6); and 300-level business/nonbusiness elective (3).    In addition to the B.B.A. core, the finance major consists of 24 semester hours. These courses include Fin 334, 338, 461, and 3 hours of Econ or Accy electives (excluding Accy 300 & 411) and 12 hours of 300 level or above Fin courses (excluding Fin 339 and Fin 451) with at least 6 hours from the following courses: Fin 431, Fin 499, Fin 533, Fin 568, or Fin 581.    Any student who wishes to pursue a second major in another area of finance listed below may not count the following courses from that major as finance electives toward your finance major:   

  • Banking and finance – Fin 537, Fin 538
  • Real estate – Fin 353, Fin 455
  • Risk management and insurance – Fin 441, Fin 442, Fin 542

Students enter the University of Mississippi School of Business as General Business majors and may declare the Finance major after completing 36 specific hours (See UM Catalog for listing). Student must achieve 2.25 or higher GPA on those 36 hours.

Andrew Wilkes, Investment Banking Analyst, J.P. Morgan (NY)

Andrew advises global and U.S. healthcare companies on mergers, acquisitions and raising capital (IPOs and issuing debt). His position allows him to build strong technical skills through in-depth financial analysis and provides a unique insight into how companies operate and grow their businesses.

Student Organizations

The Financiers Club at Ole Miss provides an opportunity for Finance students to use knowledge from the classroom to manage a real investment portfolio. Each semester, club members manage approximately $500,000 by designing long-term investment strategies, placing trades and preparing performance reports.
