Sustainable Products

The Office of Sustainability is developing unique and sustainable alternatives to conventional products, like plastic cups, as well as reinvigorating our campus compost program to reduce food waste while also opening our compost market to the local community. These products will become available for sale soon.

The UM Green Fund is a resource for students, faculty, and staff to fund sustainable projects. Since 2013, the Green Fund has catalyzed environmentally positive change across campus through the fulfillment of numerous unique projects spanning the university’s operations and mission. Every semester, we bring our local farmers market, the Oxford Community Market, to Business Row for an on-campus event where local vendors can sell homemade foods and artisanal products to our campus community. These farmers markets serve to educate students, faculty and staff about the importance and many benefits of eating locally as well as to provide resources about where to purchase local foods in Oxford.

The Office of Sustainability, in conjunction with the UM Garden Club, manages our campus garden by providing tools, seeds, and volunteers to maintain the garden space. Any member of our campus community can reserve a plot to cultivate produce, and there are designated spots for our Ole Miss Dining Services as well as our on-campus food pantry.

The City of Oxford currently lacks the infrastructure to recycle glass items, so our office contracts a Mississippi-based recycling company, Door2Door Recycling, to host glass recycling drives every semester. These events are open to all campus and Oxford community members, and we have recycled an average of about 3,000 lbs on glass at every drive.
