Audiology Services

Our evaluations and therapy in speech and language are conducted by students under the supervision of licensed and American Speech Language Hearing Association certified speech pathologist. The audiology clinic services are completed by licensed and certified audiologists.

    (OAE testing is an objective test measure that gives information about the outer hair cells of the inner ear)

    (ABR testing is an objective test measure that gives information about hearing sensitivity by measuring the cochlea and acoustic nerve).
  • Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) Evaluation
    (APD is when the brain does not know what to do with the auditory input). This testing includes both audiology and language testing over 5 separate appointments.

Speech/Language Services

Speech/Language Evaluations and Therapy are available for disorders:

• Articulation/Phonology
• Expressive and receptive language, developmental and acquired
• Stuttering and other fluency disorders
• Voice
• Aural Rehabilitation (completing therapy for individuals with a hearing loss to get the maximum function of their residual hearing)
• Adult Neurological Rehabilitation
• Augmentative Communication
• Dysphagia (swallowing)
• Dialect Reduction
• Literacy

Early Intevention

We take care of children and their families from the initial diagnosis through any treatment in conjunction with the State of Mississippi Early Intervention Program. Grant funding allows us to provide evaluation services free of charge to children from birth to their 3rd birthday. Home-based speech/language services are also available.

For children with hearing loss we are able to provide parent education and contact with other parents of hearing impaired children.

The HILL program at The University of Mississippi provides intensive language therapy to young children with moderate to severe language disorders.

The clinic is open daily Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.

The clinic closes during University of Mississippi Holidays.

• Faculty/Staff, Retired Faculty/Staff, their spouse, and dependent children receive a 50% discount on all speech and audiology services and a 10% discount on the purchase of hearing aids.
• Currently enrolled UM Students received a 100% discount and their dependent children receive a 50% discount on all speech and audiology services and a 10% discount on the purchase of hearing aids.

8. to respond to The University of Mississippi Speech and Hearing Clinic’s requests for evaluation of services provided.
9. to respect the rights, privacy, and property of other patients and staff.
10. to follow The University of Mississippi Speech and Hearing Clinic rules and procedures.
11. to fulfill financial obligations.

Ethics

All individuals who teach or provide services at UMSHC are expected to abide by a Code of Ethics.  The Code of Ethics of ASHA is available online at asha.org.  The Code delineates responsibility to the welfare of our patients, our responsibility to behave as professional, our responsibilities to other professionals, and our responsibilities to the public.

All students, faculty, and staff are expected to abide by this Code of Ethics in their conduct of clinical and academic responsibilities in the UMSHC.  It is assumed that the principles that are practiced in the UMSHC and CSD will continue to guide each student as they enter the profession of speech pathology upon graduation.

Patient Rights

USMHC complies with applicable federal civil rights laws and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex. Our patients are encouraged to ask questions about their rights if they do not understand.

The client or parent/guardian is given a copy of Patient Rights and Responsibilities, which defines their rights at their first visit to the Speech and Hearing Clinic.

Patient Privacy

UMSHC is committed to maintaining the privacy of its clients. Information pertaining to patients and their families is personal and private. The privacy of clients is also maintained with documents and records of clients. While documentation is extremely important, the UMSHC must comply with the requirements of the ways in which information may be shared. Patients are to receive a Notice of Privacy Practices that explains their rights to privacy. Students should read and be familiar with the contents of this document and be prepared to answer questions about it.

How does your child hear and talk?

From ASHA:

The development of communication skills begins in infancy, before the emergence of the first word. Any speech or language problem is likely to have a significant effect on the child’s social and academic skills and behavior. The earlier a child’s speech and language problems are identified and treated, the less likely it is that problems will persist or get worse. Early speech and language intervention can help children be more successful with reading, writing, schoolwork, and interpersonal relationships.

• One to Two Years
• Two to Three Years
• Three to Four Years
• Four to Five Years

This information represents, on average, the age by which most monolingual speaking children will accomplish the listed skills. Children typically do not master all items in a category until they reach the upper age in each age range. Just because your child has not accomplished one skill within an age range does not mean the child has a disorder. However, if you have answered no to the majority of items in an age range, seek the advice of an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist or audiologist .
