About the Department of Civil Engineering
Come learn how to build structures safely and sustainably – through classwork, research and on-site experience.
What is Civil Engineering?
Use scientific and engineering principles to design, build, and maintain the infrastructure that supports society.
Civil engineers apply principles of physics, mathematics, and material science to solve real-world problems in transportation, water resources, construction, environmental protection and urban development. They design and manage the systems and structures that shape our everyday lives — from roads and bridges to water treatment plants and sustainable cities.
With a civil engineering degree, you’ll be prepared for careers in construction, structural and environmental engineering, transportation planning, public infrastructure, and beyond. Your degree also opens doors to top graduate programs in architecture, urban planning, business, and advanced engineering disciplines.
