Department of Civil Engineering

WHAT WE DO

We emphasize the engineering sciences and civil engineering design concepts needed to design, construct, maintain naturally and/or build environmental systems such as roads, highways, bridges, dams, canals, water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, and buildings.

Civil engineering professors who guide you. Hands-on experience in the field. And, the skills to solve some of today’s biggest challenges.

That’s what you’ll find in civil engineering at Ole Miss.

You’ll have access to all the resources you need – teachers, internships, alumni and more – to prepare you for an exciting future. You could help restore the nation’s infrastructure. Or improve access to clean water. Or find solutions for environmental problems such as flooding. Or build structures with sustainability in mind. We can help you build a great career.

Our civil engineering program will give you the foundation for practice and advanced study in:

  1. Geotechnical engineering – looking at the mechanics of minerals, rocks, soil and water to determine what’s required for man-made structures built on or around them.
  2. Structural engineering – making sure structures are designed and built to be safe and resilient to environmental stresses.
  3. Transportation and construction management – using engineering skills to oversee transportation and other large projects, in terms of schedule, cost, safety, quality, function and scope.
  4. Environmental and water resources engineering – creating solutions to environmental problems such as waste and pollution, and ensuring access to clean water for human use.
