Scholarships for Military-Connected Students: Tuition Support and Opportunities

At the University of Mississippi, we are committed to supporting our military-connected students by offering scholarships that ease the financial burden of higher education. This page outlines a variety of tuition assistance opportunities, including the Military and Dependent Non-Resident Tuition Scholarships, as well as additional scholarships available to veterans, dependents, and other members of the university community.

Explore the eligibility requirements, application processes, and benefits to find the resources that best suit your needs.

Non-Resident students have several ways to cover non-resident tuition. Through three separate offerings, Ole Miss works to help non-resident student veterans and non-resident dependents understand what they may be entitled to use in conjunction with their VA Education Benefits.

These non-resident offerings include the Yellow Ribbon Program, Military Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship, and Dependent Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship.

Student Veterans will receive the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship regardless of GI Bill in accordance with State Law. Student Veterans must provide a copy of their DD-214 to get this benefit

Dependent students will receive the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship only if they receive a transfer of entitlement of VA Education Benefits, in accordance with State Law. This transfer of entitlement must be one of the following:

  • Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill
  • Chapter 35 Dependent Education Assistance Program
  • Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship
  • Yellow Ribbon Program is available to all non-resident students who have 100% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
  • Military Non-Resident  Tuition Scholarship

The Military Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship pays for the non-resident portion of tuition that out-of-state student veterans have when they are non-resident students. No veteran is required to use any form of the GI Bill to obtain this benefit.

  • In order to receive the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship, a student must be a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces. Veterans DO NOT have to have any VA Education Benefits to receive the scholarship.
  • The student veteran must be continuously enrolled at the University of Mississippi for Fall and Spring Terms.

If a student veteran exhausts their VA Education benefits, they will still continue to receive the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship as long as they have been continuously enrolled at the University of Mississippi and have continuously used VA benefits.

Students are not required to enroll in a Summer Term to remain continuously enrolled, but they may not use VA Benefits at another institution to remain eligible for the continuation of the Scholarship past benefit exhaustion.

VETERANS not using VA benefits must provide Veteran & Military Services with a copy of their DD-214.

The Dependent Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship pays for the non-resident portion of tuition that out-of-state dependent students have when they are non-resident students. Dependent students must use some form of GI Bill to obtain this benefit.

In order for Dependents to receive the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship, a dependent student must receive any of the following VA Education Benefits for themselves or as a transfer of entitlement:

  • Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill
  • Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation Program
  • * Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill (TRANSFERABLE VA EDUCATION BENEFIT)
  • * Chapter 35 Dependent Education Assistance Program (TRANSFERABLE VA EDUCATION BENEFIT)
  • Chapter 1606 Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve
  • Chapter 1607 Reserve Educational Assistance Program
  • * Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (TRANSFERABLE VA EDUCATION BENEFIT)

The dependent student must be continuously enrolled at the University of Mississippi for Fall and Spring Terms.

Once a student exhausts all of their VA Education Benefit entitlement, they will still continue to receive the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship as long as they have been continuously enrolled at the University of Mississippi for Fall and Spring terms, and have continuously used all of their entitled VA benefits at Ole Miss, to include graduate school.

Students are not required to enroll in a Summer Term to remain continuously enrolled, but they must not use VA Benefits at another institution to remain eligible for the continuation of the Scholarship past benefit exhaustion.

Students must fill out the Non-Resident Scholarship Application Form each term they wish to receive the Scholarship AFTER THEY EXHAUST BENEFITS.This form must be completed and provided to VMS and may be hand-delivered to the office or emailed to veterans@olemiss.edu with “STUDENT NAME Non-Resident Scholarship Form” as the title of the email.
