Research Credit
Find out how to get research credit for undergraduate psychology classes that require it.
Class Research Participation
Some classes within the Department of Psychology require a research component. Find out about using Sona Systems to participate in research studies.
As an alternative to completing research studies, you may elect to complete the credits by instead attending research talks. See information below on attending research talks for research credit.
Option 1: Research Studies
Sona Systems
Sona Systems is a website that we use to manage research participation in the Department of Psychology at the University of Mississippi. If you choose to participate in research you will go to the website, create your own user name, and provide information about the class for which you are registered. You can begin by going to this website:
From that page click the green button on the left that is labeled “MyOleMiss Log In” to log in with your university username and password. Then, select your course/section from the list, and you will be registered for the system.
Next, you will see an option to complete an online prescreening survey. This survey counts for 1 research credit, and is required to be able to sign up to participate in research studies. However, if you chose not to participate in research studies (in other words, if you are planning to complete all 6 credits by attending the alternative assignment research talks), then you do not need to complete the prescreen. This initial survey takes about 45 minutes to complete, and must be completed all in one sitting. You can not log back in and finish it later. So you should wait to start the survey until you know you have time to complete it.
After completing the prescreen, when you sign in you can view a list of currently available studies by clicking the tab at the top of the screen labeled “Studies.” Each study has information, including a description of what it is about, the times available to participate, and the location of the study.
If you initially decline the prescreen but decide later that you’d like to complete it, you can do so by selecting “My Profile” at the top right, and selecting the red button that says “Take Prescreen.”
If you have questions about a specific study, you should contact the researcher for that study. You can find the researchers’ names and contact information listed at the bottom of the study description on the right-hand side of the screen. There is a little red envelope icon to the right of these names that will allow you to contact these individuals via email.
Option 2: Research Talks
As an alternative to completing research studies, you may elect to complete the credits by instead attending research talks. You can find and sign up for these alternative assignment talks through the Sona system – they appear on the list of available studies to sign up for. Each talk is scheduled for 45 minutes and counts as 1 research credit. You must sign up for the talk and verify your attendance in order to receive credit. These talks are given by researchers in the department and present information about psychological research they have conducted.
