PPL 101: Foundations of Public Policy Leadership

PPL 101 is a foundational course that begins each student's journey in Public Policy Leadership. Students develop the skills necessary for understanding the policy process and decision-making.

Five students discussing a lecture

“PPL 101 truly expanded my understanding of how various types of people approach the same problem. While you may not be knowledgeable about every single topic, they are presented in a way in which everyone can contribute on the same level. It forces you to appreciate other opinions and that appreciation influences your own perspective."

Foundations of Public Policy Leadership Course

Students engage in a mock congressional hearing to develop a better understanding of public policy problems, contextual issues surrounding the policy problem, and alternative solutions that address that problem. Additionally, students write a research paper on a topic of policy of their choice, which allows them to systematically discover policy areas of particular interest to them.

Students will learn to:

  • describe the most important institutions and processes of public policy
  • recognize and analyze how values and interests influence public policy, and better understand their own and others’ views
  • analyze and explain what public policy leadership entails in different situations and policy areas
  • demonstrate their knowledge of specific policy areas, and specifically different policy responses to address public policy problems
  • think more strategically, analyze more rigorously, and write more effectively

What’s PPL 101 Like?

“Personally, PPL 101 was an opportunity for me to identify and learn about the policy areas in which I am most interested. The class challenged me to adopt a more analytical perspective on policy issues at large, and it ultimately enabled me to write in a way that was both passionate and informed. Furthermore, it was incredibly fulfilling to engage with the multiplicity of options available to policymakers in combating issues and striving for change.”
