The English Proficiency Requirement and the IEP Advanced Plus Level

International students who wish to enroll in a degree-seeking undergraduate program at the University of Mississippi must meet the English Proficiency Requirement. If you have a 3.2 high school GPA but do not have a high enough IELTS or TOEFL score for full admission, the IEP Advanced Plus Level may be right for you!

Through the IEP Advanced Plus Level, students may receive conditional undergraduate admission to The University of Mississippi and fulfill the English Proficiency Requirement by completing the Advanced Plus Level (Level 4) with a B average (3.00 semester GPA). The APL is designed to be completed in one semester (Fall, Spring, or Full Summer).

To enter the Advanced Plus Level, you must meet one of the following English achievements:

  • TOEFL iBT score of 69 – 78
  • IELTS score of 5.5
  • complete the IEP Advanced Level (Level 3)
  • other equivalent standardized English test score

If you are a transfer student from an international college or university with at least a 2.50 GPA and meet one of the above English achievements, you may also qualify for APL conditional undergraduate admission as a transfer student. This information is relevant to the common F1 US Student Visa, but other visa categories may have different requirements. Please contact StudyEnglish@olemiss.edu for questions about eligibility.

Applying to an Academic Program

To document a student’s successful participation in the IEP Advanced Plus Level, the IEP will issue a letter verifying that a student’s transcript correctly reports the student’s grades and confirming that the student has met the English Language Proficiency requirement for undergraduate admission to The University of Mississippi. Successful completion of the APL replaces the need to present TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores to the university when applying to an academic program.

Transportation is free of charge upon arrival and departure from the program for all students on the Official Arrival/Departure Dates only. Students who choose to come through alternate locations or on alternate days are responsible for their own transportation to the University.

The IEP provides on-campus housing for students wishing to book housing through our program, but please remember that there is limited space available. If you would rather live in off-campus housing, we can share resources with you so that you can book an off-campus residence.

IEP classes run on the same calendar as the University of Mississippi: mid-August to mid-December, early January to early May, and summer during June and July. Specialized two-week, four-week, and eight- week programs during the semester can be arranged for groups of 10 students or more. Please contact us at StudyEnglish@olemiss.edu for more information on customized programs.

Each level of instruction is designed to be completed in one semester and consists of courses in four core skill areas as well as content-based courses that have been designed to meet student needs. Students at each level of instruction are required to take courses in Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing, and Grammar. Additionally, students take two to three content courses. Content courses include, for example, courses in American Culture, Conversation, and Pronunciation.

Students’ levels are determined by a series of assessments administered before classes begin.

Yes, you will receive 18-hours of non-degree university credit for full-time enrollment during the semester and 6-hours of credit during each 4-week session. Transfer of credit is dependent upon the rules of your institution.

You should follow the usual application process. Additionally, you must complete a Transfer Eligibility Form. Please contact our office for this form if you wish to transfer to our program from another program.
