Managing Your Faculty/Staff Profile
Your faculty or staff profile is a central hub for sharing your contact information, academic interests, and professional achievements. This guide explains where your profile information comes from, how to update it, and how to build a complete profile in Cascade.
There are Two Types of Faculty/Staff Profiles
There are two types of faculty/staff profiles. One is a stub page, which presents the smallest amount of information, and the other is a Cascade Facult/Staff Profile, which offers an in-depth look at our faculty and staff.
Here's a quick look at these two types of profiles side by side.
| Feature | Stub Page (Automatic) | Full Cascade Profile (Recommended) |
|---|---|---|
| How is it created? | Automatically created when you're hired as faculty or staff. | Created in Cascade by your department or unit. |
| What does it include? | Basic contact info and education pulled from SAP. | Expanded info you add: research interests, biography, recognitions, courses taught, and more. |
| Where does it appear? | Employee directory and search results. | Profile modules across the website. Can replace your stub in directories and search. |
Managing Profile Information
Whether you’re changing your office location or your phone number, the steps are the same (and easy!).
Here’s what you need to do:
- Open my.olemiss.edu and select "Employee"
- Then select "My HR Tools," which will open a drop-down menu
- From that menu, select "Address and Communication Preferences," which will open a new window in my.olemiss.edu
- "Address" will be the first tab automatically selected, and you'll find a table underneath it.
- Find and select "Office Address" (should be third in the table)
- You’ll notice that “Address Details” has changed, showing information related to your office location and office phone number.
- Select the needed field and change the information so it is correct.
- Once the information looks correct, select “Save Changes.”
Your educational history is taken directly from SAP. The only group on campus that can change that information is Human Resources.
- If there’s a problem with your educational history, you can send an email detailing the problem and the desired outcome to HR@olemiss.edu
Everything else on your profile, from your summary, biography, and classes taught, is up to you to manage and update as needed. In practice, this means that you’ll have to contact your unit’s Cascade editor and let them know of the updates that your profile needs.
Let’s go through your profile from the HERO image to the footer to get you acquainted with everything this page can do.
HERO Area
The HERO area of your profile brings in your name, job title, designates whether your staff, teaching, or both, and provides the user with your email, office location, phone number, and whatever social media handle you’d like to present.
Much of this information is automatically pulled from SAP. The only thing you can change in this area directly in Cascade is your links to social media.
Profile Photo
The faculty/staff profile photo is taken by the photography team in Marketing and Communications during Snappy Hours.
Note: No other photo types can be used for the profile photo.
Summary
Your profile summary is a quick look at the rest of the page. Think of it like the blurb on the back of a book—it’s not going to give you all of the information, but just enough to entice you to keep reading.
Research Interests
Your research interests should be pertinent to your work at the university. While you may collect mid-century lamps from Nova Scotia, unless that has something to do with your work here, you’ll want to leave it off your profile.
For example, let’s imagine that your field is Apocalypse Studies. You’re research interests may include apocalyptic literature and prophecy, historical responses to catastrophe, climate crisis, societal collapse, and prepper subcultures.
Biography
Your biography is where you want to bring a narrative to your work at the University of Mississippi. What do you do? What’s important to you in and out of the classroom? What are you studying, researching, writing, etc., that you think folks should know about?
As best you can, write this bio for a general audience, especially if prospective or future students are interested in learning more about you and the rest of our faculty/staff at the university. Complex, overly academic writing shouldn’t happen here. Think warm and inviting, instead of overly complicated.
This is a great place to link your CV from.
Featured Work
The featured work is where you get to show off your publications and the rest of your work.
- This area shouldn’t be exhaustive, but showcase the most recent work you’re proud of.
For a more detailed list, the user can check out your CV.
Courses Taught
Courses taught is another section of your biography that shouldn’t be exhaustive. Teaching a class ten years ago, is a great, but this area is to give prospective or current students a look at what you do nowadays, not a decade ago.
Like your list of publications, a full list of teaching history can be found in your CV.
Recognitions
The recognitions area is where you’ll show off your different recognitions. Whether those are from teaching awards you’ve received on campus or research accolades, you can place those recognitions here.
Profile Sidebar
The profile sidebar will show up on the top right of your profile page and let the user know exactly which office, department, or center you work in, along with your school, and the campus.
This information will also help better sort you in the profile directory.
Keeping your CV up-to-date
CV’s change all the time, because of this we want to keep the CV in your hands so you can update it as needed.
Here’s how it will work:
- Find the most recent copy of your CV and turn it into a PDF.
- That PDF file will be hosted on Box, in a Box folder managed by yourself or your unit's Cascade editor.
- That PDF will be marked public, and Box will supply your unit’s Cascade editor with a shareable link
- That link will be placed on your faculty/staff profile (and anywhere else you’d like to place it)
Whenever you need to update your CV, update your PDF and replace the previous version of it in Box.
Because the link is already set, it will always lead to the newest version of your PDF (so long as the PDF is properly uploaded into Box).
If you want to get started on or edit your profile, you'll need to get in touch with your school's Cascade editor.
