About the B.B.A. in Risk Management and Insurance

Your future is secure with this degree program. Our graduates become risk analysts, commercial and personal insurance agents, brokers, underwriters, and account managers. This program includes stellar faculty members, prominent guest speakers, and funding for student travel to conferences.

Why Ole Miss RMI?

The Ole Miss RMI program is one of only 34 Global Centers of Insurance Excellence recognized in 11 countries. Our program is among the oldest and largest in the US, and our alumni network is strong and wide. Your future is secure in this degree program, where graduates accept jobs and internships across the country each year. The vast majority of graduates accept positions in the risk and insurance industry upon graduation.

Our award-winning faculty gives students the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in their careers. Advisory board members mentor students and help keep the program connected to the industry. Other highlights include RMI career fairs, an RMI resume book, an annual insurance symposium, an active RMI fraternity that hosts guest speakers and networking events, generous scholarships, an established summer internship program, opportunities to earn credit towards professional designations, and funded student travel to conferences.

Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS)

The Ole Miss RMI program encourages student participation in GIS, aiming to provide opportunities for students to learn more about the industry and enhance their professional development. This is accomplished through on-campus and online meetings and attendance at the annual Gamma Iota Sigma International conference. GIS provides a lifetime networking opportunity for its members.

RMI Internships

In the RMI program, we value experiential learning, and our majors can earn up to 6 credit hours by completing an RMI-related internship. The internship course is FINA 4450 (FIN 445), which counts as a finance elective. The course is graded, and most of the grade is earned by writing a detailed internship report that includes a SWOT analysis of your employer. You will also be graded on your personal development plan, which requires you to request mid-internship feedback from your supervisors and co-workers and then formulate a plan to incorporate it.

Once you have secured an internship, complete the Internship Confirmation Form. Dr. Liebenberg will review your form, and once your internship has been approved, he will request that you be enrolled in the requested number of hours.

    FINA 3330: Financial Markets and Institutions

    3 credits

    To provide a conceptual framework to understand why and how markets exist. This course will familiarize students with the securities traded in each type of financial market and the types of services available in various types of financial institutions. In addition, this course will address the effects of credit and financial regulations on financial markets and institutions. Students may take either Fin 303/Econ 303 (Money and Banking) OR Fin 333, but not both for credit toward a degree.

    FINA 3410: Risk Management and Insurance

    3 credits

    Basic principles of risk management and insurance; recognition, evaluation, and treatment of risk. An overview of the field.

    FINA 4410: Commercial Insurance

    3 credits

    Businesses are exposed to losses from pandemics, supply chain disruption, cyber attacks, natural catastrophes, terrorism, and various other risks. This course focuses on commercial insurance solutions to risk of property damage, loss of business income, and various sources of corporate legal liability.

    FINA 4420: Insurance Company Operations

    3 credits

    Insurance companies are among the most important financial institutions in the economy - both in terms of risk shifting and investment. This course examines the operations of insurance companies, including marketing, underwriting, ratemaking, reinsurance, and investing. The course also examines insurance company accounting and financial performance.

    FINA 5420: Enterprise Risk Management

    3 credits

    Corporate risks and the methods for handling them. Covers losses caused by natural disasters, legal liability suits, and financial price changes. Risk management methods include self-retention funding, loss prevention, insurance, and hedging contracts.

    MGMT 4930: Management of Strategic Planning

    3 credits

    A comprehensive study of the strategic management process involving theformulation and implementation of strategies at the corporate, business,and functional levels of the purposive organization. The underlyingtheory of strategic management is conveyed through lectures,discussions, and assigned readings. Application is presented throughanalysis of case situations that illustrate how companies provide valueto customers, create sustainable competitive advantage, and achievefinancial and strategic objectives. Particular emphasis will be placedon the continued development and application of students' conceptual,critical-thinking, and analytic-reasoning skills to the analysis ofcomplex strategic issues. Competency exercises refine students'decision-making and persuasive communication skills through oral andwritten presentations of recommended strategies and plans for implementation.Students may not receive credit for Manf 253 and Mgmt 493.

    Insurance Career Days & Resume Book

    Establishing and maintaining contact with the insurance industry is a hallmark of the Ole Miss RMI program. The success of an academic program is often measured by the ability of its graduates to find employment in their chosen field. One of the highlights for us at the Ole Miss RMI program is to see industry partners and our students come together at our biannual career fairs - in October and February. Our career fair is limited to our majors and those taking our insurance classes. Over 35 companies participate in our fairs each year.     RMI Students Benefit from Summer Internships

    The majority of RMI students complete paid internships. In addition to gaining valuable experience, students earn up to 6 hours of credit for completing the summer internship. At the mid-point of their internships, students interview their supervisor and colleagues to learn what they should stop doing, keep doing, or start doing. At the end of their internships, students turn in a report that includes a detailed analysis of their employer's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

    Professional Designations

    Earn industry-recognized credentials like CPCU, CIC, and CRM through approved Ole Miss coursework—giving you a head start in your insurance and risk management career.

    The CPCU designation is awarded by The Institutes and is widely recognized and respected throughout the insurance industry. This designation is recommended by The Institutes for "Agents/brokers, agency principals, claim representatives, line of business managers and executives, insurance litigators, risk managers, and underwriters."

    In the spring of 2013, The Institutes launched a new initiative that allows students to earn CPCU credit by earning a grade of "B" or better in certain approved university classes. As part of this program, students at Ole Miss can receive credit for CPCU 557 (Understanding Commercial Risk) by earning a grade of "B" or better in FINA 4410 (FIN 441), as well as credit for CPCU 520 (Connecting the Business of Insurance Operations) by earning a grade of "B" or better in FINA 4420 (FIN 442).     Please update this section to read as follows: The CIC designation has been awarded by the National Alliance for Insurance Education since 1969 and is primarily for "agency and company personnel - owners, producers, agents, account managers, brokers, underwriters, and marketing or claims personnel."

    The CIC consists of five exams within five calendar years. Students earning a grade of "C" or better in FINA 4420 (FIN 442) can receive credit for the Insurance Company Operations exam for free and are also allowed to take additional CIC exams at a significantly reduced fee. Once the student has received credit for two of the five exams, the student receives the University Associate Certified Insurance Counselor (UACIC) designation, and those two courses can be applied toward the completion of the CIC designation.

    Similar to the CIC, the CRM is offered by the National Alliance for Insurance Education. The CRM is primarily targeted toward "Individuals in risk management and the related fields of insurance, accounting, finance, law, loss control, claims, and human resources."

    Students who pass FINA 5920 (FIN 542) with a grade of "C" or better will receive free credit for the "Analysis of Risk" portion of the CRM. The student can also take the "Principles of Risk Management" exam for the reduced student fee, which will allow the student to receive credit for that portion of the CRM upon successful completion of the exam. Once the student has completed two exams, the student receives the University Associate Certified Risk Manager (UACRM) designation, and those two courses can be applied toward the completion of the CRM designation.
