About the Bachelor of Science in Sociology
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Liberal Arts is excited to offer the new Bachelor of Science in Sociology. The department also offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and minor in Sociology. The B.S. in sociology provides students with the basic tools of sociological analysis including social research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) and theory, but with a greater emphasis on computational social science and quantitative analysis. The program complements the B.A. in Sociology by strengthening students’ technical, analytical, and methodological competencies.
To compare the degree programs:
- the B.A. degree requires a minor field of study;
- the B.S. degree requires more sociology courses; and
- the B.S. degree is a more quantitative social science degree.
The Value of a Sociology Degree
Employers are looking for students who have developed the multi-disciplinary and critical thinking skills necessary to better understand our globally connected and diverse world. Sociology training is so important to those in healthcare professions that it was added to admissions tests for medical schools!
Students who major in sociology will leave with training in research design and methodology. Graduates are prepared for professional work and advanced study in fields such as data science, medicine, population or public health, user experience research and applied statistics. They also gain communication skills that are useful in a wide range of careers, including health care, law, business, demography, drug counseling, education, criminology, human resources, government services, consumer advocacy, corrections, city planning, community relations, labor relations, child welfare, counseling, marketing, gerontology research, and more.

Sociology Degree Requirements
Students in the College of Liberal Arts earning the B.S. degree have a common set of 36-38 hours of general education. The specific courses taken to complete the categories of general education may differ between majors.

A minimum of 3 credit hours in statistics from the following:
- Soc 2020
- Psy 202
- Math 115
- CSD 202,
- Soc 501
- other approved by department
A minimum of 3 credit hours in additional methods from the following:
- Soc 349
- Soc 367
- Soc 407
- Soc 408
- Soc 455
- CE 495
21 additional credit hours in Soc, with at least 6 credit hours in 300-level or higher courses.
