- Writing and speaking with confidence and skill
- Critical thinking
- Quantitative skills and data analysis
- Celebrating human expression through the arts
- Navigating complex moral and ethical situations
- Engaging the power of your citizenship
- Discovering solutions to the pressing issues facing our world.
Explore Diverse Career Paths with a Psychology Degree: From Mental Health to Business and Beyond
Besides mental health careers, psychology is an excellent major for a wide variety of potential career paths including healthcare, law, non-profits, and public service. It prepares students for careers where an understanding of human behavior and motivation is valuable, such as business, financial advising, marketing, sales, and human resources.
Our national organization for psychology and our colleagues across the country have compiled resources to explore potential careers.
- American Psychological Association's career website
- Federal Occupational Outlook Handbook to explore the categories of business, community/social services, healthcare, and social science
- Career Decision Tree for Psychology majors by Dr. Retta E. Poe of Western Kentucky University, as modified by Hanover College
- Career Options by Dr. Margaret A. Lloyd of Georgia Southern University
- Fifteen Careers in Psychology and Related Fields by Dr. Melissa J. Himelein of University of North Carolina at Asheville
- Exploring Careers in Aging by the American Psychological Association
- Job Postings for research-related jobs at the bottom of our department's webpage for graduate school preparation
Preparing for a Career
Undergraduate students should prepare for their post-graduation plans each year of their undergraduate degree. Identify the career goals and position yourself for success in reaching that goal. Here are some recommendations.
Fully explore your options
- Be fully engaged and open to the courses you are taking for general education. You can find unexpected topics and questions that become a passion and ultimately a career.
- Explore potential clubs - including psychology organizations - to join. Network, gain professionalization, work to with others to achieve goals, and have fun. Being able to work in a team and working with others on community projects are some of the top skills and experiences desired by employers.
- Volunteer on and off campus to consider future work opportunities and career options.
- Explore this department website and the examples of alumni careers to get started with career exploration and how to best prepare for those careers.
- Register with Handshake at the Career Center, begin your regular visits with their office, and attend their events. They have many career exploration resources.
Remain flexible
- Many students change your chosen career path multiple times while in college and even after graduation. This is perfectly acceptable and you will gain knowledge about what you want and do not want along the way. Both are valuable.
Utilize breaks
- Meet or shadow someone in the careers of your interest.
- Volunteer with an organization or consider a future job during college (or summers) where you can interact with professionals from a variety of career paths, particularly ones that interest you the most. Even if your job does not relate directly to what you want to do once you graduate, you can practice skills needed for the job you ultimately want. Think about the story you can tell in a cover letter or interview about how these experiences are related to your ideal career and the desired skillset.
Networking
- Remember that the relationships - both on and off campus - you make will comprise your initial professional/career network. The wider and more connected your network is, the more opportunities you will have later.
Build and maintain a positive reputation and online presence
- What you do when around others and what you post online can either benefit you in the future, do nothing to impact your future, or harm you in the future. Try to make decisions that will lead to the first two possibilities. You do not want a potential employer, recommenders, or members of your network to decide you would not be a good member of a team.
Continue exploring career options, utilizing your breaks, and building up your reputation as someone others would want to hire.
Begin to get to know professors
- You will generally need 3 people for graduate school/job references. Drop by office hours, talk with them before and after class, and/or get involved in their lab.
- Some faculty have rules about who they are willing to write a letter for - maybe it is that a student has had more than one course with them or earned a minimum grade in their class. Find out what it is and position yourself to meet those requirements.
Learn job qualifications
- Once you have career options, explore the qualifications. Search job ads and talk with professionals in those fields. Career Center and faculty can help.
- Will graduate school in psychology be in your future? If so, visit the department's webpage about preparing for graduate school. If it's (physical) healthcare professional or law school, there are dedicated offices for advising on those pathways.
- Use the knowledge you have gained from your psychology courses to set your goals and work toward them. If you have not yet covered this in your classes, research goalsetting.
Build your leadership credentials
- Being part of multiple student clubs is good. Begin to work your way into leadership positions in those clubs. Leadership skills are invaluable in all careers and you need to demonstrate you willingness to impact the world around you in a positive way.
- Better yet, bring together a few friends and create a new student organization around an issue you are passionate about. Leadership skills, working with a team, communication skills, and time management are all top skills desired by employers. Those skills are developed and demonstrated by student organizations.
- Employers also value students who have had significant community service experiences, and student organizations often provide those opportunities.
Plan relevant electives for the next few years and select a minor field of study
- There are a wide range of minors (or double majors) to pair with your B.A. or B.S. degree in psychology. Most students will also select elective courses to complete their degree. Think carefully about how you can gain the skills and knowledge relevant to your chosen career path. Speak to your academic advisor and peers when making this decision.
- In national surveys of employers, high priority is given to students who have taken courses with multiple writing assignments.
- Consider service learning or travel courses through Study Abroad or Study USA. Employers also value applicants who have studied abroad and had meaningful community projects with peers. Students who have experienced some of the wider world bring valuable skills and perspectives to the workplace.
Locate and apply for a summer internship
- In national surveys of employers, over 90% agree that they are more willing to hire a college graduate who has had an internship. It's the #1 experience recommended by employers. For many, they want to see extensive related experience on the resume, so you need a job before you can get the first job! Multiple summers of internship positions might be necessary, so do not wait until your last summer of college.
- Connect with the Career Center and the UM Internship Experience to explore their assistance in locating an appropriate internship. The Internship Experience program is a year-long program and they have public presentations by students after their internship. Attend a session and learn about whether it is right for you.
- Depending on the internship, you can also earn internship credit in psychology.
Continue exploring your options and building your network and reputation. Continue preparing for graduate school/professional school if an advanced degree is needed.
Solidify your relationship with at least 3 faculty members
- If possible, network with professors with knowledge of the career path you want to pursue. They will have unique advice and their strong recommendation will be valued.
Job specifics - location, location
- Where are the jobs located that you want and are you willing to move there? Research the communities, including housing, salary, and amenities. Some jobs are found in more locations than others and some locations will have more competition for the jobs. Consider whether an intermediate step is needed to land in your ideal living location and/or more ideal job.
Attend networking and recruitment events
- Attend career fairs on campus to verify that your skills and experiences will be competitive. Learn more about job opportunities, even if not exactly related.
- Practice being professional.
- Talk to people in your network about your desired career path and anticipated graduation date.
Locate and apply for a summer internship
- If you did not have an internship last summer, then put more effort into landing an internship for summer after junior year.
As a senior, your career preparation will change from exploration of potential options to exploration of potential positions. It is still important to explore all of your options fully and be flexible about your possibilities. This is also the time to take full advantage of the network and reputation you have worked hard to create.
Visit the Career Center
- Work with the Career Center to prepare your materials for applications and for interviews. There are multiple easy-to-avoid mistakes for job application materials as well as interviews. Make sure the core of your cover lettrer and resume is as professional and strong as possible. There are ways to convey your experiences and key terms to use that will help your application rise to the top.
- Explore job websites in the area(s) you want to live. Some jobs will be looking to hire months in advance whereas others will not be looking to hire until weeks before the job starts. By exploring job websites, you can determine when you will need to start applying to jobs and then create a timeline for searching and applying to jobs with weekly and then daily goals.
- When you receive offers to interview, remember that this interaction is part of the evaluation process, so respond professionally.
Activate professional network
- Talk to people in your network about your desired career path and anticipated graduation date so that they can inform you if there are any open positions.
- Follow up on any lead you are given even if it does not sound like the perfect job for you. You could potentially gain experience applying and interviewing that will benefit you later, and you could also gain another valuable person in your network.
Attend college fairs
- Go to job fairs prepared with copies of your final, professional résumé and dressed professionally.
Apply to jobs
- Searching for and applying for a job is work and you need to be disciplined and persistent with your time. Do not get discouraged and keep at it.
- If you get an interview, then work with the Career Center and mentors on a practice interview.
- Follow-up the interview with thank you notes, including information reminding them why you are a good fit for the job.
- Do not forget to maintain your network and relationship with recommenders and thank them for the help they are giving.
- Remember, you are searching for a first job, not your ideal job. It is less stressful to view this as a stepping stone than the ultimate and final job search. However, do not act as though you want to immediately get back on the job market if you get this job. Everyone starts somewhere.
