The Department of Art and Art History is committed to developing a foundation for understanding art history and studio art methodologies through a focus on hands-on, practical, and theoretical approaches.

Studying Art & Art History

Art & Art History majors develop skills in analysis, critical thinking, creativity, and communication. They learn to collaborate with others on projects, engage in meaningful discussions, and express ideas across different mediums. They also gain skills in interpreting and analyzing visual culture and historical context—abilities that are highly valued by employers in the creative and cultural industries.

Academic Programs

The Department of Art & Art History at the University of Mississippi offers three undergraduate degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Art, Bachelor of Arts in Art History & Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art.

Our department offers a range of concentrations that encourage artistic exploration and skill development, whether it's studying the evolution of civilizations through art history or working hands-on in ceramics, painting, and sculpture. In graphic design and printmaking/imaging arts, you’ll engage with both digital and traditional processes to communicate visually.
