Leave of Absence
Employees may be granted Leave of Absence Without Pay for either short periods or extended periods of time.
Leave of Absence Guidelines
A Leave of Absence Without Pay is granted by the employee’s department and approved by the appropriate division head (Chancellor, Provost, Vice Chancellor).
When employees return from a leave of absence, they will be reinstated to the same or a similar position if the employee is able to perform the duties required by the position and if the same or similar position is vacant.
Leave of Absence Without Pay
A Leave of Absence Without Pay is to be used for employees without accrued Major Medical Leave, Personal Leave, or Donated Leave.
Extended Leave of Absence
An Extended Leave of Absence may last up to one year. For these requests, consideration will be given to such factors as the nature of the leave, the length of service of the employee, and whether a grant of the request would best serve the University’s interest.
Information for Supervisors
When an employee will be off work for several weeks or months, the department must process a Form 3 to place the employee on a leave of absence. The start date is the first day the employee was absent from work.
A separate Form 3 is required for, but not limited to, the following changes:
- Leave of absence start date
- Change of status to “Leave of Absence With Pay” to “without pay” when leave is exhausted
- Change of status to “Leave of Absence Without Pay” to “with pay” if Donated Leave is received
- If an employee returns to work on an intermittent or reduced work schedule
- When the employee returns to work
