Workplace Transition Guide

How to create a supportive and positive workplace experience for transitioning employees.

Workplace Transition Guide

We are dedicated to fostering a free, open, and inclusive environment for everyone in our community. This commitment extends to supporting individuals who are transitioning, publicly changing their gender presentation to reflect their true selves.

We understand that this process can bring about changes and emotions not just for the individual, but also for supervisors, coworkers and students. This guide is designed to help everyone navigate the transition process with respect, understanding, and support.

It aligns with our Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment policies and upholds the UM Creed, which calls on us to respect the dignity of every person.

This guide includes:
  • Definition of terms
  • Guidelines for creating a transition plan
  • Guidelines for the supervisor and support team
  • Information on pronoun and name changes
  • Information for addressing coworker questions and concerns
  • Information on leave benefits
