Organismal Biology

The OB emphasis is for students who are interested in studying the structure and function of biological life, particularly across the diversity and natural history of organisms. This emphasis is also an excellent choice for students interested in prepared for veterinary medicine.

Student Organizations

Getting involved in campus organizations during your undergraduate years is a great way to enhance your learning, make new friends, and establish connections that can help you move forward in your career. Consult the ForUM Registered Student Organizations listing or the GivePULSE Center for Community Engagement page for information about the groups below and others.

Aqua Culture is an organization with the goal of protecting and conserving marine and freshwater environments, all while introducing University of Mississippi students to waterways that surround our campus in an exciting and meaningful way.

The organization will participate in trash clean-ups, invasive species removal, water testing, and a range of other service projects relating to protecting the aquatic environments throughout our state. This will be done in tandem with fun recreational activities that will introduce students to natural areas that they may not otherwise be exposed to in an effort to form a lasting connection that will promote awareness and conservation in their future lives.

TriBeta is the National Biological Honor Society. This society is particularly for undergrad students and is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research.

The Environmental Coalition is a club dedicated to informing people of the human impact on the environment through community outreach and volunteer opportunities as well as promoting sustainability on campus and in the community.

Members of FURR work as a team to utilize the trap/neuter/return (TNR) method as well as to provide food and water to the feral cat population on the University of Mississippi campus. Humane traps are used to capture the cats. Once trapped, the cats are taken to a participating veterinary clinic in Oxford to be sterilized and given a rabies vaccination. The cats' ears are tipped while in surgery so that they can be identified and monitored once they are released. After surgery, the cats are put in a safe quiet place for a while to make sure there haven't been any complications. Afterwards, the cats are returned to the exact same place they were trapped. We also remove socialized/friendly cats from campus to potentially be adopted out to a loving home. However, we are not a shelter. Also, FURR focuses solely on the cats on the Ole Miss campus; unfortunately, in most cases, we are not able to address the problem of free-roaming dogs around Ole Miss campus.

University of Mississippi Minority Association of Successful Scientists will run and extend the mission to diversify the biomedical field by providing unique and focused both scientific and professional development opportunities. ACR also serves as a promotion for the University of Missisisppi Biomolecular Sciences Affinity Groups. ACR is an extension of the Biomolecular Students Association (BSA) within the department of Biomolecular Sciences School of Pharmacy.
