Voice students perform in a range of musical settings from opera to jazz, as soloists and in ensembles, while refining their talents and repertoire.
                                            
Working in choral, orchestral, art song, musical theatre, opera, and chamber settings, voice students receive well-rounded training. Students are mentored closely by our talented faculty in the studio, classroom, rehearsal hall, and coaching sessions.
Our ensembles provide unique opportunities for interacting with the rich tradition of song. From one voice to one hundred and fifty, UM Choirs and the UM Opera Theatre encourage the exploration of expression through a wide range of historical and contemporary styles.

                                    University of Mississippi Choirs
Whether you plan to be a vocal music major, minor, graduate, or plan to pursue another degree and want to sing in choir...we have a choir for you: Concert Singers, University Chorus, Men's Glee, or Women's Glee. Music majors and non-music majors are required to audition for choir. Your audition is to give us the information we need to place you in an ensemble. Rest assured, there is a place for you in UM Choirs.

UM Opera Theatre provides comprehensive training for the next generation of singing actors through developmental training in movement, interpretation, stagecraft. Be a part of our talented and diverse company where you will learn how to work with conductors, directors, and colleagues to prepare for a career on the stage.
Perform with Opera 
                            Attend Conferences
Students are encouraged to participate in vocal competitions, attend conferences, and continue learning outside of the classroom. Both faculty and students participate in workshops at National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
- Dr. Bunt works with students at the 2025 Mississippi State NATS auditions in February, held at Mississippi State University.
 
                            Learn from Celebrated Artists
The Department of Music welcomes guest artists as both performers and teachers. Voice students have had the opportunity to work with elite performers such as Lawrence Brownlee, operatic tenor, and Angela Brown, soprano, in vocal master class settings.

                            Composer Collaboration
Marilyn Shrude, composer and pianist, brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to music students during her time as the Sarahfest Resident Artist. Students were invited to attend a theory presentation, master class, LMR Live show, performance, and reception featuring the composer.
