Strike Teams
Strike Teams guide your interdisciplinary collaboration, helping you move proposals forward.

We’re ready to support your proposal development
Strike Teams are interdisciplinary groups committed to preparing and submitting proposals for specific, high-impact funding opportunities within a designated timeframe, with focused support from ORED Research Development (RD).
How do we form a Strike Team?
Prospective interdisciplinary research teams self-assemble and designate a UM lead investigator (Team Leader) and potentially one or more co-leaders from distinct departments (Co-Leader). Assembled teams submit a short internal application via the UM InfoReady Review Portal, requesting targeted research development support for their chosen funding opportunity (the Goal). Team leaders must commit to submitting a proposal (the Strike) within a set timeframe, known as the Strike Period. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, and selected teams receive dedicated support.
ORED RD provides specialized front-end support to Strike Teams, complementing the back-end review services from ORED Pre-Award. Support services may include:
- Monitoring program websites for relevant updates
- Connecting teams with additional resources
- Summarizing funding opportunity details and sharing them with the team
- Assisting with timelines, to-do lists, and reminders
- Navigating institutional support requests and letters
- Coordinating Indirect Costs (IDC) sharing plans among collaborators
- Providing access to enhanced proposal review services
- Creating applications in sponsor portals, and collecting, reviewing, and uploading proposal documents
- Submitting the transmittal for institutional review and approval
- Coordinating the review and submission process with ORED Pre-Award
- Supporting Just-In-Time requests and post-submission requirements
Strike Teams dissolve once the proposal (the Strike) is submitted, and the Result (e.g., a Score or a Miss) is received, or if the proposal is called off. The Strike Period may be extended for a resubmission following a Miss, but support will end at the Period’s close. Teams may reassemble later as new Strike Teams.
ORED RD tracks and reports Strike Team outcomes, including submitted proposals (Strikes), funded proposals (Scores), declinations (Misses), and award impacts (e.g., total award dollars).
To qualify for ORED RD support, prospective Strike Teams should:
- Involve multiple investigators (Team Leader, Co-Leader, and Team Members)
- Represent multiple disciplines, units, or institutions
- Demonstrate a reasonable chance for success based on team qualifications and the specific funding opportunity
- Identify a specific funding opportunity (the Goal) with a submission window allowing sufficient lead time for a competitive proposal (3 to 15 months recommended, although shorter timelines may be considered)
- Preference may be given to opportunities with:
- Expected funding of $500K or more
- Full F&A (indirect cost) recovery
- No cost share requirement
